No. 23 Pacific Opens Four-Match Homestand

STOCKTON, Calif. – The No. 23 Pacific women's water polo team (2-11) will kick off GCC play this weekend when they begin a four-match home stretch on Friday afternoon against Azusa Pacific (4-8).
 
Hosting three games in three days, the Tigers will also welcome No. 16 San Diego State (7-9) and No. 2 UCLA (17-2) to Chris Kjeldsen Pool as they look to get back in the win column.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Competing in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine, the Tigers dropped all  four contests of tournament play, falling to No. 2 UCLA (14-3), No. 7 Cal (15-4), No. 12 Long Beach State (12-7) and No. 15 UC Davis (12-9).
  • Battling through the entire weekend, sophomores Toula Falvey and Brianna Utas led the attack for Pacific, each totaling six goals by the end of the weekend.
  • Adding support when called upon, sophomore Lucy Davis and junior Brooke Contreras tallied three goals each during tournament play in Irvine.
ON THE PROWL:
  • Hitting her stride in her second year in Stockton, Utas currently leads the Tigers in goals (20) and total points (32) while also placing second on the team in assists (12) and steals (13).
  • Spreading the wealth, UOP has five players with at least 12 goals on the season: Ana Martinez do Amaral (12), Falvey (12), Davis (13), Savannah Fitzgerald (17) and Utas (20).
  • Looking for their first victory since a 12-11 thriller over No. 24 Marist on Jan. 25, the Tigers will aim to gain their momentum back as they look to push their winning streak against Azusa Pacific to eight straight in their first matchup of the weekend. 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS:
  • Receiving votes in the Collegiate Water Polo Association National Women's Varsity Top 25, Azusa Pacific comes into the contest winning their previous two games, taking down Fresno Pacific, 16-8, and California Lutheran, 17-10, on Saturday, Feb. 22.
  • Overall, Milena Guzmán Ortiz paces the Cougars with 14 goals and 15 total points in addition to leading the team with 10 steals.
  • In the cage, Olivia Lott has racked up 50 saves, good for a save percentage of .424.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS:
  • After winning their GCC opener against Concordia-Irvine on Friday, Feb. 28, San Diego State dropped their last match, 12-8, at No. 5 UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 29.
  • Similar to the Tigers, the Aztecs have six players on their roster with at least 11 goals on the season: Haley Hagerty (11), Sydney Hurst (13), Karli Canole (14), Isabelle Hastings (17), Maddy Parenteau (17) and Emily Bennett (22).
  • Splitting time, goalies Grace Holiday and Jordann Heimback have tallied 24 and 58 saves respectively inside the cage for head coach Carin Crawford. 
SCOUTING THE BRUINS:
  • Matching up with UCLA for the third time this season, the Bruins have defeated Pacific twice this year: 14-7 on Jan. 25 and 14-3 on Feb. 21. However, both matches were at neutral sites as the Tigers will welcome UCLA to Stockton for the first time this season.
  • Additionally, UOP will be aiming for their first-ever victory against the Bruins as they currently hold a 26-0 all-time record against the Tigers.
  • Competing in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational just like Pacific, UCLA finished third in the tournament after taking down No. 3 Hawaii, 10-5, in the third-place game.'
  • Recently, the Bruins moved up one spot to tie Stanford for second in the CWPA National Women's Varsity Top 25 Poll that was released on Wednesday, Mar. 4.
