Tigers Close Out Non-Conference Play with Close Loss to Toledo

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Brooklyn McDavid got back to double-digit scoring with 12 points and Valerie Higgins led the Tigers with 19 points, but Pacific (7-4) fell 66-65 to Toledo (4-6) in the final game of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena to close out non-conference play.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half
  • A hotly-contested and physical first few minutes led to a 9-8 Pacific lead at the first media break in the midst of a 9-0 run that included a fast break bucket from Higgins and a three from Jessica Blakeslee
  • Pacific ended the first quarter with 18 points on five assists, shooting 47 percent for the frame.
  • The Tigers kept Toledo relatively quiet from the floor, keeping the Rockets without a three-pointer until the 3:21 mark of the second quarter and holding them to 36 percent shooting in the first half against a 48 percent clip for Pacific.
  • Pacific's inside game led the way in the opening 20 minutes with the Tigers holding a 22-8 advantage on points in the paint.
  • Pacific's offense, known for going on separation-creating runs, converted four of five field goals midway through the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead, its largest to that point.
  • Both sides battled on the boards in the first 20 minutes, as the 15-14 advantage went to the Orange and Black led by three each from Higgins and McDavid.
Second Half
  • McDavid re-entered familiar territory Friday evening, reaching double-digit scoring for the first time in two games and ninth time this season with a nifty turnaround jumper at the 8:04 mark of the third quarter.
  • Toledo kept the game interesting, particularly in the latter stages of the second half while Higgins and company worked to keep a lead.
  • Pacific gave the Rockets a taste of their own medicine, forcing the Rockets into foul trouble while grinding out the remaining minutes of the contest.
  • Jordan Cruz took a charge at the 3:36 mark of the fourth quarter to set up a Higgins lay-in on the ensuing Pacific possession, but it wasn't enough to waver the Rockets' momentum over the final few minutes.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Cruz heated up in just her second game in the Orange and Black. After a three-assist performance a night prior against St. Francis with no turnovers, the Utah transfer and Sacramento native got in the scoring column for the first time in her Pacific career with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, including going two for three from downtown.
  • Higgins earned all-tournament honors for the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic after turning in a 19-point performance on 6-of-13 shooting to go along with nine rebounds and five assists. The Granada Hills native also earned City of Stockton Human Resources Player of the Game for the performance.
UP NEXT:
With non-conference play in the books, Pacific kicks off its West Coast Conference slate next weekend with road games against Santa Clara and San Francisco on December 28 and 30, respectively. Don Gubbins will have the call on Pacific All-Access.
