Tigers Fall in WCC Opener at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (7-5, 0-1 WCC) caught fire in the second half - particularly the third quarter - but fell 75-65 to Santa Clara (7-5, 1-0 WCC) Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center in both teams' West Coast Conference opener.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half
  • Pacific and Santa Clara were tangled neck and neck throughout better part of the first quarter, but cold shooting blanketed the opening frame with neither Pacific (28) nor the Broncos (40) eclipsing 45 percent from the floor.
  • Valerie Higgins grabbed five rebounds in the first quarter alone and six of Pacific's 16 in the first half.
  • Pacific cut a 14-point deficit down to four in the final minutes of the half with a three from Jessica Blakeslee in the latter stages of the second quarter.
Second Half
  • Pacific caught some momentum off Bronco turnovers, then clawed back to a four-point deficit at the 1:52 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Tigers outscored Santa Clara 19-10 in the third quarter to close the gap and briefly shift momentum.
  • Blakeslee caught fire in the second half, going 3 for 4 from the floor and 2 of 2 from deep for 10 points to help the Tigers' comeback.
  • Loretta Kakala scored seven of her career-high nine points in the second half.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Kakala put up a career-high nine points to lead the Tiger bench on 4-of-9 shooting with three rebounds in the WCC opener.
  • Blakeslee finished the contest with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting with three three-pointers.
  • Higgins posted her third double double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds to earn City of Stockton Hardworking Player of the Game honors.
