Pacific vs. Cal - In Case You Missed It:
The Tigers found themselves up by a pair of scores on three occassions against third-ranked Cal Saturday morning but unfortunately could not pull away for the victory as they dropped their first match of the day, 10-8.
First Period:
- Pacific showed resilience in their first match against No. 3 Cal. The Tigers went seven straight possesions before freshman Bogdan Djerkovic clinched the first goal of the game at the 2:48 mark.
- Following a Cal score, junior Andrea De Nardi put Pacific back on top with a late goal in the final minute of the period off a pass from teammate Luis Araya.
- This gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage over the Golden Bears and swung the momentum in their favor to close out the first.
Second Period:
- Djerkovic continued to battle in the two-meter box for the Orange and Black scoring in the sixth and fourth minute to record his first-ever career hat trick.
- A beautiful touch-pass play executed by Luke Pavillard and Luis Araya gave the Tigers a two-point advantage, 5-3, with 1:50 to go in the second period.
- Cal would trim the lead down to one, however, off a goal from Vassilis Tzavaras. The Bears would have another opportunity to score but a late save by keeper Alen Osmanovic kept them at bay and gave Pacific the final possession of the half.
- Two exclusions were called in the period against Andrea De Nardi (2:33, 1:37) forcing the junior attacker to play cautiously approaching halftime.
Third Period:
- Both teams played a competitive and highly physical third period not allowing a goal until two minutes to go in the third.
- On a Golden Bear break in the 4th minute, Osmanovic made two reaching saves in the two-meter box to prevent a score by Cal's Nikos Delagrammatikas and maintain Pacific's edge at 5-4.
- After an exclusion by Delagrammatikas, De Nardi capitalized on a Tiger powerplay by finding the back of the net (2:22) and putting Pacific back up by a pair.
- Cal would score with 1:18 to pull right behind the Orange and Black, 6-5, ending the period.
Fourth Period:
- Ege Colak registered his second goal of the match on the Tigers opening possession (6:59) to have Cal trail by two once again.
- An exclusion by Djerkovic allowed the Bears to score off a powerplay in fifth minute and keep the match close at 7-6. Cal went on to score an additional goal to knot the match up at 7-all, the first tie between the two teams since 1:27 left in the first period.
- Colak and Pavillard would have three good-looking opportunities to score during the fourth and third minute of the period but unfortunately could not get the ball passed Cal's Bernardo Carelli. The keeper made eight saves in Saturday's contest.
- Cal took it's first lead of the day off a Pacific exclusion. This put the Golden Bears up 8-7 with 3:03 to go.
- A floater over the head of Osmanovic (:26) seemed to put the match out of reach for UOP trailing by two. Head Coach James Graham would give UOP a chance, however, drawing up a play and giving Colak a one-on-one opportunity against a Cal defender which he broke free off a spin move and netted in a goal with :18 second left.
- The Bears would score one more goal to end the game.
