Lions Defense Too Strong for Tigers

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific baseball team dropped game one of the series to Loyolay Marymount University on Thursday evening, 13-4.

The Tigers fall to 8-16 overall and 1-6 in West Coast Conference action while the Lions improve to 13-12 on the season and 6-1 in conference.

After one scoreless inning, the bats started to fly in the second. LMU started off with Brandon Shearer hitting a leadoff double up the middle. Cooper Uhl bunted to reach on a fielder's choice and advanced to second allowing Shearer to run for third and ended up scoring on a throwing error by the Tigers to take the 1-0 lead.

Ryan Ruley stepped up to the plate and pushed Uhl to third on a sacrifice bunt. Dylan Hirsch smashed a double down the right field line to score Uhl to give LMU a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Lucas Halstead led off with a single up the middle. Halstead turned the wheels on, as he stole second and advanced to third on a Lions error. Freshman Alex LeForestier stepped up and smacked a triple to right field to score Halstead to put the Tigers on the board and trail, 2-1.

Matthew Tarantino allowed the tying run hitting a sacrifice fly out to left field to score LeForestier and tie the game, 2-2.

However, it was not enough, as the Lions scored two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth, three runs in the second and two in the eighth to claim the 13-4 victory. The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not overcome the LMU defense.

The Orange and Black notched eight hits with LeForestier and Kevin Sandri each tallying two hits. LeForestier went 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI and one run. Sandri finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored. Tyler Ryan, Nate Verlin, James Free, and Halstead combined for the other four hits.

Shelby Lackey (2-2) was charged with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings with two strikeouts, while Codie Paiva (3-3) picked up the win for the Lions after pitching 7.0 innings and struck out four batters.

Pacific returns to action for game two of the series against Loyola Marymount on Friday, March 30 with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
