Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of the Pacific dropped its contest against No. 12 Indiana in day two of the three-game series, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers fall to 7-9 on the season, while the Hoosiers improve to 10-4 overall.
After four scoreless innings, the Hoosiers claim the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Logan Kaletha doubled to left field to lead off for Indiana. He advanced to third on a ground out. Logan Sowers stepped up with one out, and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kaletha for the first run of the game.
At the top of the seventh, Tyler Ryan led off for the Tigers and knocked a double down the left field line to put himself in scoring position. James Free was able to push Ryan to third on a ground out.
With two outs, Nate Verlin stepped up to the plate and scored Ryan on a ground out to second base to tie the game, 1-1.
However, at the bottom of the seventh, the Hoosiers scored two more runs to take the victory, 3-1.
Ryan led the offense with two hits in four at-bats, notching a double and one run. Nate Verlin was right behind with one hit in four at-bats tallying one RBI. Matthew Tarantino and Lucas Halstead each contributed one hit, as well. Halstead's hit came at the top of the sixth inning, ending the Hoosiers no-hitter.
Lucas Sweany (0-4) was charged with the loss after pitching six innings and striking out three batters. Pauly Milto picked up the win for the Hoosiers. Milto went seven innings with nine strikeouts and gave up just one run. Matt Lloyd earned the save.
"This was a tough loss for us but Lucas Sweany's outing is a bright spot for our program moving forward," said head coach Ryan Garko. "A freshman on the road came through in a big way, he was composed and attacked hitters all game. Defensively, we gave this one away by not making some routine plays that we usually make. We'll have to get back to work and come back ready to play tomorrow."
The Orange and Black close out the series with No. 12 Indiana on Sunday, March 11 with first pitch slated for 10:00 a.m. PST.
