Tigers Fall At Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The men's water polo team dropped their nonconference match to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 15-7. Pacific splits the weekend, 1-1, with a win against UCSB on Saturday and now holds a record of 9-8 overall, 2-0 in GCC play, on the season.

Stanford moves to 2-0 on the weekend and 15-1 overall for the year. 


In Case You Missed It:

  • The Tigers found themselves trailing early on in as Stanford scored four goals in the first period and held UOP to just three goals in the first half to take an 8-3 lead.
  • Bogdan Djerkovic got things going for the Orange and Black registering a pair of goals in the first half to keep Pacific in contention.
  • Jonathan Cooper also added two goals of his own to match Djerkovic for the match. The freshman duo led Pacific in goals scored.
  • The Cardinal took advantage of their opportunities on goal outshooting the Tigers with a .625 shooting percentage. UOP held a shooting percentage of .280 for the match.

First Period:

  • Stanford jumped out to a 2-0 lead to open the match. 
  • Bogdan Djerkovic tallied a much-needed goal for the Orange and Black at the 6:12 mark cutting the Cardinal lead in half, 2-1.
  • Pacific would be limited to just three shots after the Djerkovic goal as Stanford scored two more times to end the period.

Second Period:

  • Both teams would keep themselves scoreless for the first 2:30 minutes of the second quarter.
  • Djerkovic erased the scoreless drought, however, converting on a powerplay (6:19) off an assist from Engin Ege Colak.
  • The Cardinal would respond with a 3-0 after that point run to widen the margin, 7-2.
  • Luis Araya clinched Pacific's final goal of the half at even strength with 3:22 to go. 

Third Period:

  • Following a Cardinal exclusion (6:39) Colak had chance at a 5-meter penalty shot but it would be saved by Stanford's goalkeeper, Oliver Lewis.
  • Luke Pavillard helped UOP get back on track scoring with 5:25 to go for his only goal of the game. The junior attacker would take just two shots in the match.
  • Five of the Tigers' 12 exclusions were called in the third period, including four straight during the fifth and second minute marks.

Fourth Period:

  • Jonathan Cooper kicked off the final frame for the Tigers off a powerplay goal. This put Pacific down 10-5.
  • Jay Halva also found his way to the back of the net with 4:00 to play in the match.
  • The Tigers weren't finished yet as Cooper notched his second of the day with a solo goal at 3:04.
  • The Cardinal would hold on for the victory afterwards.

Notables:

  • Five different Tigers recorded goals in their match on Sunday. 
  • Bogdan Djerkovic matched his career-high with five shots on goal. The Ottowa, Canada native now has 15 goals this season leading all freshman.
  • Jonathan Cooper registered a career-high with two goals in the match. The freshman attacker now has scored in four of the Tigers' last five matches.
  • Making two starts this weekend for Pacific, two of Jay Halva's four goals on the season have come in the Tigers' two matches with Stanford. His first goal against the Cardinal coming last weekend (Oct. 13th).
  • Luke Pavillard made it five goals on the weekend after notching one score in the third period on Sunday. Four of the Perth, Austrailia native's goals this weekend have come in the second half. 
  • The Orange and Black converted on 3-7 powerplay opportunities carrying a shooting percentage of .429 for the match when playing six-on-five.

Up Next For the Tigers:

  • The Orange and Black pick things back up next Saturday with a match on the road at No. 6 Pepperdine.
  • The Waves are currently 12-1 for the season, 2-0 in conference. 
  • Pepperdine is coming off a weekend split with a 13-12 win over UC Irvine and 17-6 loss to No. 1 USC this weekend.
  • The Tigers faced off against Pepperdine at the MPSF Invite last weekend, dropping the match 13-9.
