Baseball Topped By BYU, 5-2

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team out-hit BYU 8-6, but the Cougars capitalized on costly miscues for a 5-2 win on Saturday in the series finale at Klein Family Field.

Matt Tarantino, Ryan Schalch, Lucas Halstead and Ryan Robards each posted 2-for-4 afternoons. Halstead homered and doubled in the game while scoring both Pacific runs, while Robards finished with a double and an RBI.

Ricky Reynoso pitched well, allowing zero earned runs in six innings of work on just three hits. But the lefty struggled on throws in the infield with a pair of failed pickoffs and bunt attempts leading to four unearned runs.

Reynoso mowed down the first nine Cougars he faced, but in the fourth, surrendered a leadoff walk. After an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, Tanner Chauncey singled to left for BYU's first hit of the game and a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Halstead and Robards delivered back-to-back two-out doubles to tie the game at 1-1.

In the sixth, BYU plated three runs as the Cougars opened the inning with a pair of singles and a run came in to score when a sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away. The Cougars laid down a squeeze attempt, and after freezing the runner on third, the throw to the bag was thrown away allowing another run to score. Bronson Larsen added an RBI groundout for the third unearned run of the inning.

The Cougars tacked on a run in the seventh on a pair of singles, a double-steal and a wild pitch by Vince Arobio.

BYU starter Hayden Rogers went six innings, scattering seven hits while allowing one earned run.

Halstead drilled his fourth home run of the season in the ninth, but Keaton Cenatiempo finish off the final three innings for his fourth save.

BYU moves to 17-12 overall and 7-2 in West Coast Conference play.

Reynoso falls to 3-4 on the year, while Rogers improves to 3-1.

Pacific (12-18, 2-10) will open a three-game road series at San Diego next Thursday.
