STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 9 Pacific women's water polo team smothered No. 21 Loyola Marymount en route to an 8-3 win at Chris Kjeldsen Pool Friday. Mariana Duarte, Aelish Guinn, Rachel Krieger and Viktoria Szmodics each scored twice for Pacific.
The Tigers held LMU to three goals on 26 shots and 1-for-7 with a 6-on-5 advantage.
Pacific converted 2-of-4 with the advantage in the contest to improve to 2-0 in Golden Coast Conference play. The Tigers are now 13-7 overall and have won 13 of their last 15 regular season GCC games.
The Tigers jumped out to a 6-1 first half lead as Duarte opened the scoring 1:46 into the game. Krieger followed with a spinning backhand off a pass from Viktoria Tamas and Guinn scored her first with 1:28 to go in the first quarter. LMU got on the board with four seconds to go in the period as Caitlin Schafer converted on the power-play.
In the second quarter, Krieger scored to the to lower right corner, under the arm of the Lions' keeper, and after an LMU exclusion, Guinn rifled a quick shot of a restart pass from Kyra Christmas for a 6-on-5 goal and a 5-1 lead. Szmodics added a cross-cage 6-on-5 goal with 1:05 to go before halftime as the Tigers led 6-1.
In the third, the Lions tallied back-to-back goals as Schafer scored in transition off a steal and set-up from Morgan Molloy. Two possessions later, Hana Vilanova's shot to the near post was just out of Alexis Hollinrake's reach as the Tigers keeper got her hands on it, but it carried into the near side to bring LMU within 6-3.
Szmodics restored a four-goal lead with a lob shot over the keeper with 4:07 to go in the third, and the Tigers defense held LMU off the board the rest of the way.
In the fourth, Duarte capped the scoring as the Tigers salted away the 8-3 victory.
Hollinrake finished with nine saves for Pacific.
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against No. 25 Cal Baptist.
