Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Heartbreak late sent Pacific field hockey home with a loss as the Kent State Golden Flashes scored with zero time left on the clock off a corner to get the 3-2 win. The Tigers fall to 0-2 with the loss and will now head off on a four-game road trip, with their next game coming this Thursday at 11:00 am against Harvard. Kent State is now 4-1.
Pacific took the lead first thanks to a partial breakaway by Alicia Muiños and Ali Campos. Muiños forced a turnover near the top of the circle and dribbled in, finding Campos standing alone in front of the goal. Campos had time to wind up and fire it past the goalie with ease to make it 1-0.
Kent State took their first lead of the game in the second half, scoring twice in six minutes to go up 2-1. The first goal came when Laura Pujade was left in a one-on-one situation with the defense backtracking to help. Pujade made a valiant stab at the ball but it went into the bottom corner of the net as Alison Harmatz scored her fourth goal of the year.
After a yellow card put Pacific down a player for five minutes, Kent State took advantage to make it 2-1. Pujade made a series of great stops but was eventually undone by a rebound off her pads. Silvia Figa Malgosa was there to knock it in and take the lead.
Kent State only led for three minutes before the Tigers tied it back up. Marguerite van Wyk blasted a shot high into the top right corner of the net off a penalty corner for her first goal of the year. Hayley Kilfoil sent the ball in and Hannah Tvergyak stopped it expertly as each picked up assists.
"We battled back," said Head Coach Andy Smith of Pacific's quick tying goal. "We put ourselves in a position to win and we've only got ourselves to blame [for the loss]."
Pacific kept the pressure on for the rest of the game but couldn't make the most out of some daring scoring opportunities. A cross to Campos in the box on the run nearly netted a goal, but Campos' dive was just out of reach of the ball. The Tigers had three breakaway chances in the game, each of which was turned aside by Kent State's Andrea Rinehart.
The Golden Flashes were awarded a corner with just four seconds left in the game. A shot from Figa Malgosa looked to be going high and was almost called a dangerous shot but was tipped into the back of the net by Ines Delpech. A video review of the play came up inconclusive, leaving the call as it stood and giving Kent State the victory.
