San Francisco - The Pacific Track and Field team had a great showing at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, paced by new school records set in the 5000m as well as the 3000m steeplechase, as seniors Mia Knipper (Morada, Calif.) and Lindsay Wourms (Camas, Wash.) etched their names into Pacific Track and Field history, breaking ground with big time improvements at Cox Stadium on the San Francisco State campus.
Knipper finished first in the fourth heat of the race by more than three seconds, finishing in 17:46.27, eclipsing the previous best set by senior Becky Grabow at the Distance Carnival in 2014 by nearly ten seconds. It was the third sub-18 minute 5000m time in the history of the program and blasted past Knipper's previous personal record in the discipline (18:15.55).
Grabow finished in 18:13.05, also eclipsing Knipper's previous best, but falling just short of her personal record in the distance.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Wourms took down the 11:28.68 mark she set at the Hornet Invitational on March 18th, finishing in 11:18.00, a larger than ten second improvement. Wourms holds the top six 3000m steeplechase times in the history of the program.
The 1500m was also a great distance for the Tigers on Friday, as freshmen Erica Ramos (5:06.50) and Haley Silva (5:08.31) posted personal records. Ramos took more than eight seconds off her previous high while Silva improved by 16 seconds.
In the 800m, senior Lauren Nakaso finished with a 2:22.71 in the 800m, her third-best ever time in the distance.
Pacific will wrap up the SF State Distance Carnival with shorter distance events and sprints tomorrow, with action starting at 10:00 a.m. Live timing for the contest is available via PacificTigers.com and fan are encouraged to check the schedule page for links to the stat broadcast.
