Box Score 2 Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers triumphed for the second straight game, winning game one of a Sunday doubleheader with Northern Colorado 8-5. Danny Mayer homered in the bottom of the eighth to help Pacific along to a four-run inning, erasing a one-run deficit. It was the third homer of the year and eighth extra-base hit for Mayer, both leading Pacific by a long shot. Mayer also leads the team with 11 RBI. The Tigers moved to 4-7 with the win, while UNC drops to 2-9.
Ricky Reynoso made his fourth start of the year for the Tigers, going four innings and allowing five runs. Bryce Lombardi came on in relief in the fifth and earned the win with four innings of scoreless baseball. It was Lombardi's first win since April 11, 2014, as Lombardi missed all of 2015 with an injury.
Alex Werbach toed the rubber for Northern Colorado and also went four. Corey Nakakura relieved Werbach in the fifth after Werbach gave up four runs on six hits in his time on the mound. The loss went to Nakakura.
After a leadoff double to start the game, the Bears took the lead in the first with a bloop single into rightfield. Reynoso settled down after giving up hits to the first two batters, forcing an around-the-horn double play and getting an easy flyout.
The Tigers put two on the hard way with two straight hit-by-pitches to start the game. Kevin Sandri, Pacific's leader in on-base percentage, was hit first, with Nate Verlin reaching a few pitches later. It was the third HBP of the year for Sandri. A double play erased the scoring threat.
Two more runs went up on the board for Northern Colorado in the second. The Bears walked twice to start the inning and moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Reynoso forced a popup to make it two outs but UNC's Jacob Ek laced a single to center that was just barely out of reach of Jimmy Boras, who was forced to slow down and play it on the hop.
For the second inning in a row, the Tigers put the leadoff man on. Lucas Halstead was the hot hitter this time, singling through the right side. The junior would end up with three singles in five at-bats on the day. An error and a walk loaded the bases.
Boras used his speed to beat out a grounder and get the first run of the game for Pacific. The centerfielder stole second one pitch later, making him two-for-two this year.
An RBI triple to left center in the third gave Northern Colorado another run. The Bears managed to drive in their fifth run with a sac fly from the next batter, extending their lead to four runs.
Nate Verlin hit his second triple of the year with a booming flyball that landed fair deep in the corner. Verlin hustled around second and beat the throw to third with a strong slide. Danny Mayer took care of it from there, grounding out to the shortstop and bringing in the run for his team-leading eighth RBI.
After snagging two blistering line drives in the top half, J.J. Wagner led off the bottom of the fourth with a single straight up the middle into centerfield. J.P. Yakel copied Wagner with a single of his own to center. A bunt by Boras landed in no-man's land and the speed of Boras put him on, loading the bases with no outs. The bunt single gave Boras a four-game hitting streak.
Two groundouts in a row drove in two more runs, cutting the deficit to just one run. The RBI went to Sandri and Verlin, giving them four and five on the season, respectively.
Lombardi masterfully worked his way out of a jam in the sixth inning. After putting two on and dealing with men on second and third with one out, the senior got two straight outs. Lombardi forced a popup on the infield and a groundout to keep the deficit at one.
The strong relief outing continued with a third scoreless inning from Lombardi. After giving up a leadoff single in the seventh, Lombardi stranded the runner and earned his second swinging strikeout to help shutdown the Bears offense. Lombardi went four innings total, striking out two and giving up just four hits.
Sandri singled in the eighth to extend his team-best hitting streak to five games. That hitting streak is the longest of the year for any Tiger, though Wagner's earlier hit put the junior just one behind Sandri with a four-gamer. The single also moved Yakel to second, as the catcher had smoked an infield single one batter earlier.
Verlin followed with a single that dropped in front of the rightfielder and tied the game. It was the second RBI of the game for Verlin. The run gave Verlin six RBI total this year, one of five Tigers with at least that many.
The tie didn't last long thanks to a monster mash by Danny Mayer that sailed over the leftfield wall with ease. Mayer's third homer of the year gave him 11 RBI, the first Tiger to reach double digits, as well as pushed Pacific in front 8-5.
Vince Arobio came on after that to wrap up the game and try to earn his first save of the season. Arobio struck out the first batter and the last batter he faced in a scoreless ninth, sealing the victory for Pacific.
Next up after today's doubleheader for the Tigers is one game against South Dakota State this Tuesday at 6:30 pm. That game will be the first Dollar Dog Night for the Tigers, as well as the first koozie giveaway. Tickets for the game are available online.
