Women's Basketball Shocked By San Diego Comeback

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team led for all but 35 seconds total Saturday against San Diego, but the Toreros' came from behind to stun the Tigers, 59-56. Desire Finnie scored a game-high 17 points for the Tigers.

Najah Queenland added eight points and eight rebounds, while Erin Butler chipped in eight points and a pair of blocks. GeAnna Luaulu-Summers finished with five points and five assists.

Pacific built an 18-point lead at halftime, by shooting 61 percent in the first half, out-rebounding the Toreros 20-14. Finnie hit a jumper to open the scoring, Queenland added a pair of free throws as the Tigers led 4-1 by holding San Diego to misses on their first seven shots. Finnie and Queenland added buckets as the Tigers led 8-6. Malina Hood's jumper tied the game at 8-8 but Finnie added back-to-back three-point plays, hitting both and-one free throws as the Tigers led 18-12 after the first quarter.

Luaulu-Summers found Simons underneath with a dump-off and basket as the Tigers stretched the lead to 23-15. Eackles drilled a three for an 11-poitn lead. The Toreros posted four straight points before Simons found Eli Lopez Sagrera for a reverse lay-up. Queenland restored an 11-point lead with a kiss off the glass.

Erin Butler drained a triple and Simons scored inside for as Pacific's lead swelled to 17. A baseline jumper from Chelsea Lidy put Pacific up 41-23. Ameela Li added a floater and the Tigers posted stop on defense to carry a 43-25 lead into halftime.

San Diego regrouped in the locker room, using the entire halftime to make adjustments. The team returned to the floor with 12 seconds left before play resumed. And the adjustments worked as San Diego held Pacific to 13 second half points, and 5-of-20 shooting (20 percent). USD shot 50 percent in the second half (13-of-26) and held a 21-13 rebounding advantage. After Pacific forced seven first-half turnovers, San Diego committed just two in the second half.

In the third, the Toreros began to whittle away at Pacific's lead as Malina Hood hit a three to pull within 46-37, but Butler answered with a triple of her own. The Toreros trimmed the gap to 49-41 as the Tigers hit a 1-of-9 shooting slump. But Pacific's defense posted back-to-back blocked shots and Queenland hit a lay-up at the buzzer of the third as Pacific led 51-41 after three. But the 16-8 third quarter put San Diego within striking distance.

A jumper from Aubrey Ward-El pulled San Diego within five, but Butler posted another block on defense. Cori Woodward brought San Diego to within four, at 51-47 with five minutes left. With the shot clock dwindling, Ward-El hit a leaner, but Li drained a three from the corner for the Tigers first points of the quarter with 3:40 remaining as the Tigers kept the lead, 54-49.

Malina Hood finished inside, but Finnie answered with a jumper from the block. Woodward cut the Pacific lead to three on a lay-up with 2:47 remaining. Pacific used the whole shot clock on each possession down the stretch. The Toreros posted a stop on defense, and one of two free throws cut the margin to 56-54. The Tigers missed a jumper as the clock ticked under a minute to go. Malina Hood hit a three-pointer for San Diego's first lead of the game with 34.8 seconds left. On Pacific's next possession, the San Diego defense clamped down on the baseline, forcing a turnover. After Ward-El hit a pair of free throws, the Toreros - whistled for just one fourth quarter foul to that point - used their fouls to give to deny the Tigers time to set up a good look. Butler got away a three from the corner in the final 1.7 seconds, but it rimmed out at triple zero.

The Tigers fall to 10-13 overall on the year, and 3-9 in WCC play. Six of the Tigers losses have come by three possessions or less, including three WCC games.

San Diego is now 21-3 overall, 11-2 in West Coast Conference action.

Pacific will visit Loyola Marymount (Thursday) and Pepperdine (Saturday) in WCC action next week.
