Eackles Scores 28 on Senior Day, But Santa Clara Takes Win

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Hailie Eackles tied her career high with 28 points on Senior Day, but the Pacific women's basketball team fell 66-60 in the home finale to Santa Clara.

Eackles connected on six three pointers and added five steals on her Senior Day. Fellow senior Erin Butler finished with five points on a three-pointer with four rebounds.

The rough and tumble contest featured 49 personal fouls, a plethora of video reviews and three technical fouls, all assessed to the Tigers.

Eackles played all 40 minutes despite taking a pair of blows to the nose, the last of which led to a lengthy delay for video delay and ultimately went the Broncos way.

Emily Simons chipped in six points with eight rebounds for the Tigers, while Desire Finnie added six points and six rebounds with five steals. Mauriana Clayton added five points and four boards, while GeAnna Luaulu-Summers handed out five assists and finished with five points.

The Tigers loss, combined with a Loyola Marymount win over Pepperdine, dropped Pacific into the eighth seed in the WCC Tournament as Pacific falls to 6-12 in league play and 13-16 overall.

Eackles opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but the Broncos' Morgan McGwire connected on a jumper and three-pointer. GeAnna Luaulu-Summers answered with a tripled for the Tigers to tie the game at 7-7. After six straight by the Broncos, including a pair of technical free throws after the Tigers returned the ball to an official, Clayton scored inside and Butler added there to bring the Tigers within 13-12. But the Broncos tallied back-to-back buckets for a 17-12 lead. Eli Lopez Sagrera finished inside, before the teams traded free throws. Eackles stole an inbounds and hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer to cut the Broncos lead to 20-18 after one quarter.

A Clayton put-back closed the Tigers deficit to 26-24 with 4:59 to go. Eackles drilled back-to-back three pointers for a 30-26 lead with 3:15 left in the first half. Eackles and Chelsea Lidy added free throws as the Tigers carried a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Eackles scored 12 points in the second quarter, more than Santa Clara's nine as a team. The Tigers outscored Santa Clara 16-9 in the second period as Pacific forced eight turnovers and hit 8-of-8 free throws.

In the third, Eackles added a free throw, but McGwire hit a three for Santa Clara. The Broncos reeled off three straight from the free throw line, including both free throws following a technical foul issued to the Tiger bench for protesting the incongruity of treatment in the paint. Devin Hudson added a lay-up to give the Broncos a 37-35 lead. Emily Simons ended the run with a jumper in the paint, and Eackles converted a four-point play to give the Tigers a 41-39 lead with 3:01 left in the third.  Simons scored inside but Marie Berthold answered underneath. Eackles canned her fifth three of the game, for a 47-45 lead after three quarters.

McGwire connected on another three for Santa Clara, but Finnie answered with a jumper. Finnie tallied again, but Savanna Hanson's corner three gave the Broncos a 53-51 lead.

Eackles splashed home another three cutting the Broncos lead to 55-54, but Devin Hudson scored inside for a three-point lead.

Santa Clara scored a pair of buckets underneath for a five point lead. Clayton hit a pair of free throws, but on the next possession, Eackles was struck in the nose for a second time in the game and was whistled for a technical foul. Eackles missed no time as the video review of the play provided time needed to close the wound. However, the play was ruled inadvertent contact, but the technical foul against Eackles stood. Santa Clara hit the free throws for a 63-58 lead.

Luaulu-Summers hit a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left, but down three, the Tigers elected to go for the stop with a 20 second differential between shot clock and game clock. The Tigers held strong, but with the shot clock at one, McGwire flung a turnaround hook shot from the top of the key, and it rattled home for a five-point lead with 22 seconds left. Pacific committed a turnover on their next possession and Brooke Gallaway hit one of two free throws to settle on the final margin.

Santa Clara hit six-of-six free throws following technical fouls and 14-of-20 for the game en route to the Broncos' 22nd win of the year. Santa Clara wraps the regular season at 22-7 overall, 13-5 in WCC play.

Pacific will face Pepperdine in the 8-9 game of the WCC Tournament first round, at noon on Thursday in Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
