Stockton, Calif. - The No. 12 Pacific women's water polo team fell to No. 3 Cal Saturday, 8-5 despite two goals from Karolina Hlavata.
Rachel Krieger, Viktoria Szmodics and Megan Torre also scored for Pacific, who fell to Cal for the third time this season.
After Sierra Smiley opened the scoring Cal in the first, Cal carried a 3-0 lead after one on a pair of goals from Grace Morgan. Neither team could solve the defense as the second quarter went scoreless.
In the third, Hlavata broke through with a goal on the Tigers first possession, but Genevieve Weed answered back for the Bears. Szmodics tallied with five minutes left in the quarter to pull the Tigers within 4-2. But Weed blazed a shot into the back of the cage for a 5-2 advantage.
Hlavata tallied in the fourth to print the Tigers within one, but the Golden Bears responded as Sarah Siepker put Cal up 6-3. After a Kriger power-play goal, Carla Carrega scored for Cal. Torre drew within 7-5, but Carrega finished again to curtail any comeback bid by Pacific,
The Tigers fall to 4-9 on the season, with every loss coming to a team ranked in the top 11. Cal improves to 12-1 on the year.
Alexis Hollinrake made four saves in goal with three steals, while Madeline Trabucco recorded eight saves in goal for Cal.
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against No. 24 CSU Bakersfield.
