Box Score Palo Alto, Calif. – Pacific's program-record winning streak came to an end today with a 3-0 loss to the No. 18 Stanford Cardinal despite outshooting Stanford 11-10. Pacific's loss in their first America East Conference game of the year drops them to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Stanford is now 3-0 in conference.
The shutout was the first time Pacific has been held without a goal since their season-ending tournament loss to Albany last November. Laura Pujade took the loss, her first since September 8, and falls to 9-4 on the season. The senior made three saves in her 60 minutes of work.
A defensive struggle saw just two shots recorded in the first ten minutes of the game, one for each side. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Stanford's first shot found the back of the net to make it 1-0 as Jessica Welch scored on a lifted shot from the middle of the circle.
Pacific went right to the attack following Stanford's goal, earning two penalty corners in a 30-second span but both shots went wide of the net. Stanford's counterattack was stonewalled by Pujade who easily turned away the shot for her first save of the match.
That was all the offense either team could muster for some time with no shots recorded by either side until the 25-minute mark. The Cardinal earned a penalty corner at that point but couldn't get anything off their three shots thanks to the strong defensive work by Pujade and the Tigers.
Pacific earned an advantage with 6:46 left in the first half when Stanford was given a green card. Axelle Steffen and Marguerite van Wyk had shots go wide early in the advantage but Pacific couldn't get the tying goal they needed.
At the half, the Tigers found themselves still trailing 1-0 despite shots favoring Stanford just 6-5.
An early green card against Pacific in the second half proved costly as Stanford extended their lead to 2-0. Lucy Dikeou scored for the Cardinal on the player advantage.
Another Stanford goal pushed it to 3-0 at 43:23. Casey Deeds scored that goal as she tipped in a pass thrown across the circle.
Jessie Niccum took over in net with nine minutes left in the game. Niccum stopped the only shot she faced in the game.
Allie Konkol nearly scored for the Tigers in the last five minutes of the game. Konkol beat the goalie with her shot only to have a Stanford field player make the defensive save.
The Tigers managed a flurry of shots late but still couldn't solve Stanford as the game ended with two corners and three shots by the Tigers, all for naught.
Pacific will start next week with a road game against UC Davis on Friday, October 14 at 2:00 pm. After that, the Tigers return home to take on Stanford on Sunday, October 16 at 2:00 pm.
