Pacific Suffocates No. 15 Stanford

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - For the second year in a row, the Pacific Tigers shut out the Stanford Cardinal at home, this time between the No. 15 Cardinal 1-0 on the Pacific Field Hockey Turf.  Savannah Burns scored the only goal of the game as Pacific has now won 11 of its last 12 games.

The 11 wins on the year for Pacific ties the program record for wins.  The Tigers, who also won 11 games last year, still have three games left to try and top that record.

"Last weekend we didn't feel we did ourselves justice," said Head Coach Andy Smith about their loss at Stanford last week.  "We fixed it and worked on it all week and we're in a really good place."

Laura Pujade picked up her third shutout of the year, stopping all four shots she faced to move to 11-4.  Stanford's Kelsey Bing falls to 7-5 with the loss.

The Tigers managed to dominate the possession game in the first half but couldn't get a goal.  Pacific had eight shots and four corners in the first 35 minutes while allowing just one corner and one shot on goal in that time.

The game's only goal came 20 minutes into the second half off another of Pacific's six total corners. Hayley Kilfoil inserted the ball, sending it on to Katharine Egan's stick expertly.  Burns took control from there and shot fast and low.  The ball beat a diving Bing and hit into the bottom left of the goal to make it 1-0.

In addition to the assist, Egan made a defensive save, her fourth of the season.  A shot from the Cardinal got behind Pujade but Egan was there and easily controlled it and fired it out of the circle to safety.

Pacific's defense didn't allow Stanford to get anything started on offense for most of the game.  Despite two green cards against Pacific in the last 15 minutes, the Tigers only allowed two shots on goal until the last seconds of the game.

Stanford earned an untimed corner as their final chance to tie it up.  Pacific fought off the first corner as Pujade made a save.  A second corner ended the game as the Tigers poked the ball out of the circle and away from everyone to end it.

The win moves Pacific up the standings in the West Division of the America East.  "These guys got a taste of [a championship] last year and they want more this year.  We've got a lot of hockey left in us," said Smith.  The Tigers have three conference games left and are tied with Stanford in the loss column but hold the tiebreaker with fewer non-conference losses.

The Tigers play host for two America East games next week.  On Friday, the Tigers will take on Cal at 3:00 pm at the Pacific Field Hockey Turf.  Pacific stays at home to play UC Davis on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
