Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific volleyball team outlasted Loyola Marymount for a 3-2 win (22-25, 27-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-9) Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Lexi Elman led the Tigers with a season-high 26 kills to go with 10 digs.
Emily Baptista added 10 kills while Ashlyn Fleming chipped in eight kills and nine blocks. Lauren Cline set a new career high for the second-straight match, as she finished with nine kills while hitting .316.
Jessica Diederich posted 26 assists, with Andie Shelton adding 24 to go with five blocks. Katrin Gotterba tallied 21 digs for the Tigers defense.
LMU jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held a 15-10 margin at the media break. The Lions led 18-13 before a 5-0 run by Pacific to tie the set. But LMU posted back-to-back points for a 20-18 lead. A kill from Baptista brought Pacific within 21-20, but Sarah Sponcil posted a pair of kills as LMU took the set 25-22.
In set two, the two teams traded early aces, before the Lions took a 5-3 lead. Lauren Cline added a kill to tie the set at 6-6. Tied 8-8, Pacific embarked on an 8-3 run as Fleming recorded a kill and a pair of blocks, while Elman blasted home two kills for a 16-11 lead. The Lions rallied with a 5-1 run to close within 17-16. Baptista served up back-to-back aces, but Sponcil posted a kill and a block as LMU tied the set at 23-23. Elman's kill gave the Tigers a 25-24 lead, but Savannah Slattery answered with a kill from Sponcil. Baptista provided another set point for Pacific with a kill, and Katrin Gotterba served up an ace for the 27-25 win, tying the match at 1-1.
Pacific took a 6-3 lead in set three on a kill from Baptista, and stretched the margin to 12-5 on an Elman kill and block from Fleming and Alicja Wilk. The Lions closed within 15-11 before the Tigers pulled away with kills from Baptista, a block from Andie Shelton and two service aces from Maycie LaBass stretched the lead to 22-15. Cline and Elman added kills before Wilk slammed home the set winner, 25-18. Pacific hit .320 and never trailed in the set.
LMU opened to a 5-1 lead early in set four, and cruised to a 25-16 win by hitting .324. Pacific pulled within 11-6, but Sponcil tallied two-straight kills to restore a seven-point lead and the Tigers would get no closer.
Pacific took a 4-3 lead in set five, but Erin Williams knotted the set at 4-4. Elman posted three consecutive kills as Pacific seized control. Wilk added a pair of kills and the Tigers never let LMU within less than three. Baptista's kill provided an 11-7 margin, and after a Slattery answered with a kill, Shelton and Fleming teamed for a block for a 12-8 lead, and Elman added two more kills including the match-winner.
Pacific improves to 4-1 in WCC play and 10-7 overall. LMU falls to 11-5 overall, 2-2 in WCC play.
The Tigers will hit the road for matches next week at No. 6 San Diego (Thursday) and No. 11 BYU (Saturday).
