#12 Women's Water Polo Downs #24 Marist

Ann Arbor, Michigan - The No. 12 Pacific women's water polo team posted a 13-9 win over No. 24 Marist to open their weekend at the Michigan Invitational Saturday.

Viktoria Szmodics and Ellen Tiedemann each scored four goals while Karolina Hlavata added three. Aelish Guinn and Rachel Krieger each added a goal for the Tigers.

Alexis Hollinrake made 16 saves in goal for the Tigers.

Tiedemann gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds in, but Marist answered back with goal from Amanda Amorosa on the next possession. The Tigers took the lead right back as Hlavata converted on the power play. Marist evened the score off a Katie Tijerina goal and took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Susan Cantoni. The Red Foxes stretched the lead to 4-2 as Amorosa tallied midway through the period.

Pacific rattled off four straight goals as Szmodics scored on the power play to cut the deficit to one. A five-meter penalty shot save from Hollinrake put momentum on the Tigers side, as Szmodics finished a pass from Mahnke to tie the game at 4-4. Krieger scored off an assist from Tiedemann to give Pacific the lead after one.

Hlavata posted her second off an assist from Szmodics before Marist answered with a goal from Isabel Leveque. But Szmodics tallied the hat trick with a five-meter penalty goal, and Tiedemann finished for a three-goal lead. Szmodics and Hlavata each tallied again as Pacific took a 10-5 lead into the half.

In the third, Tiedemann converted off an assist from Brinnley Barthels as the Tigers led 11-5. Alexa Ovalle and Ariana Singer scored for the Red Foxes before the close of the period.

Aelish Guinn stretched Pacific's lead to 12-7 to open the fourth, and Tiedemann tacked on her fourth off another Mahnke assist.  The Red Foxes added on goals from Jocelyn McQuade and Ellie Hoffman late to settle on the final margin.

Pacific scored 13 goals on 27 shots in the contest. The Tigers improve to 2-3 on the season and face No. 11 UC Santa Barbara at approximately 5:50 p.m. PT Saturday, with live stats and video offered.
