Box Score Las Vegas, Nev. - With a flick of his head, freshman Camden Riley sent the afternoon's contest in the desert to overtime as the Tigers' men's soccer team looked for its first win of the season. However, Riley's late game antics would not be enough as Utah Valley scored the golden goal of the contest in the eighth minute of the first overtime period to give the Wolverines a 2-1 win over Pacific on Friday afternoon. The overtime loss dropped the Tigers to 0-3 on the young season while Utah Valley improved to 3-0. The loss was Pacific's third-straight one-goal defeat, all coming by the same 2-1 margin.
"I am super proud of our performance today," said head coach Ryan Jorden. " We chased the game the whole second half and to show the type of commitment and fight that we did was huge. We made good progress today against a good team. The fight we showed and the ability to control the tempo and the pace of the game throughout the second half while forcing overtime for the first time was big. We moved one step closer to where we want to be today."
Trailing by one through the entire second half of the contest, the Tigers mounted a furious attack over the final 45 minutes of regulation in search of the equalizer. Outshooting the Wolverines 10-6 in the period, the Tigers finally broke through, netting the game-tying goal with just :17 seconds remaining in the game on a corner piece won by the Tigers. Sending the ball into the middle of the box, redshirt-sophomore Kirk Kappelhoff's cross eventually found Riley open near the back post after a Wolverine defender deflected the ball to the Tiger freshman. With the ball in the air, Riley redirected the deflection into the back of the net to notch his first collegiate goal and send the contest into extra-time.
Despite the momentum from the last second equalizer, the win was not in the cards for the Tigers on the day as the Wolverines returned the favor in the first overtime with a goal off a corner of their own. Saving the first attempt off the corner, sophomore Curtis Goldsmith could only watch as Lucas Cawley knocked home the game-winner with a bicycle kick from five yards out for his first goal of the season. Cawley's strike came off a rebounded shot from Skyler Milne after the Wolverine junior put a header on frame off Utah Valley's 11th corner kick of the contest.
Prior to the late game scoring by both sides, the two teams found themselves locked in a 0-0 draw throughout much of the first half before Utah Valley broke through with its first goal of the game in the 42nd minute of action. Working his way though the Tigers' defense, Utah Valley's Thomas Loomis came up with the opening strike from 18 yards out when he cracked a shot across the goal and into the left side of the net for his first goal of the season. The goal would stand as the lone notch on the scoreboard until Riley's header in the final minute of regulation.
In all, the Tigers' came up with 12 shots in the contest with 10 coming in the second half. In goal, Goldsmith posted eight saves on 17 Wolverine shots.
Pacific is back in action on Sunday when the Tigers take on UNLV to close out the weekend road trip. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
