Box Score The Pacific Tigers fell to the Miami RedHawks 2-0 Thursday afternoon in their first of three games this weekend. The Tigers fall to 1-2 on the season and will next face off against the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday at 3:00 pm at the Pacific Field Hockey Turf. Pacific will also play the Saint Louis Billikens on Sunday at noon. Miami moves to 2-1 this season.
The game was scoreless until 60:30, when Miami's Mariona Heras scored on a low shot coming off a penalty corner. Both of Miami's goals came as a result of corners, as Paula Portugal scored at 68:56 on a redirect of a shot from another penalty corner for the RedHawks. "They took advantage of their penalty corners and we didn't…we've got to be better in front of goal," said coach Andy Smith about the corner effectiveness.
Alicia Muiños just missed on a golden opportunity with 2:55 left in the game when her shot beat the goalkeeper but bounced off the post and away. It was just one of Pacific's 14 second half shots that were all turned aside by Miami. "I take a lot of positives out of today but we've got finish at one end…we had 10-12 grade A scoring chances and we've got to be better on those," said Smith.
Laura Pujade made nine saves in goal as the RedHawks had 21 shots in the game. The Tigers were outshot 15-4 in the first half, including 8-1 in shots on goal, but managed six shots on goal in the second half to close the gap in what was an up-and-down, action-packed game. Ali Campos ended the game with nine shots for the Tigers, including several that went just wide of the goalmouth.
