Men's Soccer Sliced In 2OT Thriller

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - In a chippy contest that featured seven yellow cards, the Pacific men's soccer team was outlasted by visiting San Diego State in two overtimes, falling on a sudden victory goal in the 104th minute of the contest. Ernest Reyes came up with the winning goal for the Aztecs as his header trickled in off an initial attempt from Travis Nicklaw, past the grasp of Tigers keeper Curtis Goldsmith. Pacific falls to 1-8 on the season while San Diego State escaped to improve its record to 5-1-2 on the season.

The Tigers were held without a shot for the first 45 minutes of action, a defensive battle that included a double caution in the 41st minute as Spencer Vue and Ozzie Ramos were tied up near midfield.

Pacific came out of the intermission break with a burst of confidence, controlling the tempo for the first 15 minutes of the second half. In the 63rd minute, Tristan Blackmon saw a shot attempt blocked before the redirection was scooped up by the boot of Alfredo Alcala, who blasted a strike wide. In the 71st minute, Blackmon received a cross with an intent to give Pacific a late lead, but his volley sailed out of harms way for the visitors.

Pacific was caught offsides 12 times during the match, as SDSU was able to trap the hosts and keep Pacific from creating offensive separation at times. Curtis Goldsmith had another valiant effort between the pipes for the Orange and Black, making four saves in regulation, including a 90th minute effort to deny Luke Ackermann an attempt at ending the game in 90.

After Goldsmith denied a strike from Dallin Cutler In the first overtime period, Pacific had a strong chance offensively Brian Im broke free past the back line, but his shot attempt was saved by the body of Nedin Tucakovic, who came out the goal to keep the game alive for the Aztecs. Julio Cervantes fired a shot at the end of the first ten minutes of action, but it sailed high, sending the two teams to a final period to decide the contest.

In the second overtime period, Pacific saw a set piece go fruitless in the 103rd minute before the Aztecs regained possession on the counter attack. After a scrum in front of the goalmouth, Travis Nicklaw headed the ball towards the back of the net. His attempt was intercepted in mid air by Ernest Reyes, who was able to redirect the shot past Goldsmith, as the ball trickled in to end the contest.

Tristan Blackmon finished with three shots to lead the Tigers on the Afternoon while Goldsmith finished with 5 saves on the day.

Despite the sudden defeat, Head Coach Ryan Jorden was pleased with his team's effort on Sunday afternoon noting,  "Today was a hard one. I thought we did everything we needed to do to put ourselves in position to win against a very, very good team."

He continued, "To pitch a shutout for 104 minutes shows the character and quality that we're developing. I couldn't be anymore pleased about what we did organizationally and how we competed today."

Pacific will now return to action a week from today as the Tigers play a 6:00 pm match at CSU Bakersfield. A live video stream will be available via Bakersfield.com and live stats will be available via PacificTigers.com
