Box Score Spokane, Wash. - A pair of scoring barrages by Gonzaga did the Tigers in on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash. as Pacific dropped the middle game of the weekend series, 19-2, at Patterson Baseball Complex. The win for the Zags (22-24, 11-12 WCC) evened the series after Pacific (12-34, 9-14 WCC) took the opening game the night prior.
From the outset, the Zags jumped on the Tigers scoring eight early runs with seven coming against Pacific's starter, Will Lydon (1-9), who could not get out of the second inning in his 13th start of the year. Scoring twice in the first and five more in times in the second, the Zags knocked the Tigers down early before knocking them out late.
Not secure with the runs they produced early, Gonzaga added another series of crooked numbers to the scoreboard with two in the sixth, six in the seventh, and three more in the eighth after Pacific had put its first runs on the board in the seventh. In their six-run seventh, the Zags would send 12 batters to the plate while recording five hits and benefitting from the Tigers' first error of the night to score four unearned runs. In the inning, Mitch Gunsolus, who already had two big hits on the night, came up with two more in the inning including an RBI single off of second base with the bases loaded in his second trip up after doubling to start the frame.
Overall, Gonzaga came up with 11 extra-base hits while all nine starters recorded a hit in the game and six produced multi-hit affairs. Three of the 11 extra-base hits came from Gunsolus who finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and and a three-run home run in the second. He would finish a triple shy of the cycle while driving in five RBI. Not far behind, Sam Brown added two triples hitting right behind the senior third baseman as the duo scored five runs on the night from the top of the lineup.
After sending the minimum to the plate through six despite recording a pair of hits, the Tigers finally got to the Bulldogs' Brandon Bailey (8-2) in the seventh with two runs coming into score to break up the shutout. Finding their footing against Bailey, Pacific came up with three hits including RBI knocks from from Louis Mejia and Nate Verlin. The rally was setup by a bunt single by Tyler Sullivan to start the inning as the senior centerfielder came up with his second of two hits on the night.
Despite breaking up the shutout, the Tigers missed a chance to really get back into the game in the inning as they would leave the bases loaded after putting runners on with only one out. The missed opportunity ended what would be Pacific's only real chance in the game for big runs. The last two outs recorded in the inning by Bailey would be his last two of the night as the reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week went 7.0 IP while allowing five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five to earn the win.
With the loss to the Bulldogs the Tigers were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
The two teams meet for the rubber-game finale on Sunday, May 10 at Patterson Baseball Complex on senior day for the Zags. The game is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
