Tigers Close Out 2015 In Tough Fashion, Falling To Portland

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Playing their final contest of the 2015 season, the Tigers came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 shutout as Portland captured the weekend finale on Sunday, May 17. The loss completed Pacific's season at 14-37 overall and 10-17 in WCC play while the Pilots finished at 12-42 on the year and 7-20 in WCC action.

In a tight well-pitched contest by both sides, the matchup turned on just a handful of plays as the Pilots took advantage of the few chances they had on the day to capture the deciding game of the three-game series. Despite throwing a quality start in his final collegiate contest, Michael Benson (2-5) was tagged with the hard luck loss on senior day as the Prescott, Ariz. native allowed just one unearned run in 6.0 IP in the decision.

The lone tally against Benson came in the top of the third inning when a mistake to leadoff the inning set up the Pilots in the inning. Ryan Barr, who finished the game 3-for-4, cashed in on the error for Portland as the junior right fielder came up with a two-out RBI single to put the run on the board.

The run in the third would be the lone tally on the scoreboard for either team for the next five innings as neither side could push a run across. After being held in check by the Tigers' seniors on the mound, Portland finally broke through for a second run in the top of the ninth as they turned a leadoff double by Turner Gill into an insurance run with three outs to play for the Tigers. The tally came against senior Michael Hager who was in the game for his second inning of relief after taking over for senior Cory Popham.

In total, the Tigers' senior pitchers allowed seven hits in the game as Benson scattered five in his six innings of work while Hager allowed two in two innings on the mound. The trio struck out five and walked one in nine innings on the mound.

For Pacific, the Tigers were not without their opportunities as they left 10 runners on base throughout the game including stranding six in scoring position. Both teams had runners thrown out at the plate during the game as the Tigers caught the Pilots trying to tag up and score from third in the top of the fifth while the Piltos cut down the tying run for Pacific in the seventh.

Overall, Pacific came up with five hits in the final game of the year as Portlands' Cole Doherty (2-5) matched Benson pitch-for-pitch to earn the victory. Doherty allowed four hits and no runs over 6.0 IP as he struck out two and walked two in the win. Carl Snaring (3) closed out the game for the Pilots as the third pitcher into the game, going 1.1 IP while not allowing a Tiger to reach.
