Tigers Fall On The Farm

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - On a cold Tuesday night on the Farm, the Tigers dropped a 7-2 decision to Stanford a night after beating the Cardinal in Stockton. The loss for Pacific (7-24) started a nine-game roadtrip while Stanford (12-18) snapped a four-game losing skid to split the midweek home-and-home series.

Jumping on the Tigers early, the Cardinal scored first as a leadoff walk in the second turned into an early run when Zach Hoffpauir knocked an RBI single up the middle. The run kicked off a scoring binge for the Cardinal as they came up with five more runs over the next two innings to take firm control of the contest.

Pacific was not without its opportunities early on as the Tigers had a chance to answer the second inning run in the very next inning. The Tigers were able to put runners at second and third with only one out but came up empty despite working three walks in the frame.

The inability to score proved even more costly as the Cardinal jumped on Pacific further in the bottom half of the inning with two runs thanks to three-straight singles culminating with an RBI single by Matt Winaker. The scoring was set up by a pair on infield hits and a balk to start the frame.

The Cardinal broke the game open an inning later with three more runs as they tacked on four more hits and used the running game to do their damage. A leadoff home run in the sixth by Bryce Carter made it a seven-run advantage for the Cardinal and capped the scoring night for Stanford.

Starter Cory Popham (0-3) was charged with six of the seven runs in the game for the Cardinal as he went 4.0 IP while allowing nine hits to go along with one walk and three strikeouts. His counterpart, Andrew Summerville (2-0) finished 5.0 IP as he exited his first career start with the lead without allowing a hit to the Tigers. He struck out five and walked five in the outing before handing the ball over to his bullpen. Barely missing a beat, freshman Keith Weisenberg picked up where Summerville left off as he went the final 4.0 IP to finish off the Cardinal's win and grab his first career save.

Summerville's four-inning save was not without its late drama as the Tigers broke up the Cardinal's combined no-hit bid in the ninth with a single off the bat of Nate Verlin before breaking up the shutout with an RBI single by J.P. Yakel. Pacific threatened for more with the bases loaded but ended up plating just two in the inning to end the game.

Tigers will remain on the road as they head to San Diego for a three-game, WCC, series beginning on Friday, April 10. The first game of the series is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Fowler Park.
