Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Closing out their out-of-conference series with UC Davis, the Tigers dropped an 11-5 afternoon contest to the Aggies at Klein Family Field on Sunday, April 26. The Aggies (25-16-1) used three big hits and three big innings to pull away from Pacific (9-32) to earn the three-game sweep on the weekend.
Falling behind early, the Tigers gave up three runs in the top of the first inning when Austin March lifted a 1-0 Cory Popham pitch over the right field fence for a three-run home run. The home run came after the Tigers had turned a double play with the bases loaded to get with in one out of getting out of trouble, only to have March hit his first home run of the season.
Three innings later, the Aggies struck for four runs on four hits as they came up a home run short of a team cycle in the inning with RBI hits coming from John Williams and Evan Heptig, the last of which was a triple into the gap for the Aggie nine-hole hitter. UC Davis would finish off the scoring with a squeeze play as they pushed their lead to five runs at the time.
Looking to break the game open for good, UC Davis turned to their senior leftfielder once again as March came up with his second big fly of the day, a two-run home run to the exact same spot beyond the right field fence. They would add a third run in the inning to make it a 10-4 contest before scoring their final run of the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Cameron Olson.
With the Aggies scoring in bunches, the Tigers could only counter with smaller tallies as Pacific scored in four-consecutive innings early but only posted five runs. In the second inning and trailing by three, the Tigers picked up their first run of the game on an RBI single through the left side by J.J. Wagner. Pacific would load the bases with just one out but a line drive to short off the bat of Tyler Sullivan quickly turned into a double play and put an end to what looked like a big inning for the Tigers.
After scoring an unearned run in the third, Pacific would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to three at 7-4. Just as they did in the second, the Tigers appeared as if they were on the verge of another big inning as five-straight batters reached base safely as the top of the order followed a one-out walk to McKay Koissian with four-consecutive singles. The Tigers would get runs out of the hits from Jimmy Gosano and Brett Sullivan to pull with in three, but a second bases loaded double play ended the threat and essentially put an end to Pacific's day as the Aggies would plate three runs in the next half inning to break the game wide open.
Overall, B. Sullivan and Wagner came up with multi-hit games as they each recorded two of the Tigers' nine hits on the day. Koissian in the nine-hole finished the game 0-for-1, but ended up on base three times as he was walked in three trips to the plate to set up the top of the order.
The middle of the Aggie order did the bulk of the damage throughout the day against the Tigers as Izaak Silva, March, and Olson accounted for nine of the 15 UC Davis hits. Olson finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored while March posted a 3-for-5 effort with three runs scored and five RBI.
On the mound, Popham (1-4) took the loss for the Tigers as he went 3.1 IP while giving up nine hits and seven runs. Pacific would use six pitchers in the game while the Aggies needed two for their nine innings of work. Max Cordy (8-2) earned the victory as he gave up eight hits and four earned in 5.0 IP while Nat Hamby (3) grabbed the four-inning save for the Aggies. Hamby allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven in his four full innings on the mound.
Pacific heads into the final third of its conference schedule on Thursday, April 30, when BYU comes to Klein Family Field to begin at three-game, WCC, series. The opening game of the week is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Thursday night.
