First Inning Rally Downs Pacific On Saturday Afternoon

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Suffering a nine-run first inning, the Tigers could not recover as they fell 12-4 to Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon at Klein Family Field. Pacific's (0-13) loss marked their fourth-straight series loss while the Mustangs (4-7) came up with their first series win of the season.

From the outset the Tigers were playing from behind as the Mustangs sent 14 batters to the plate and plated nine runs in the top of the first inning to take control of the contest before the fans could find their seats. Knocking starter Jake Jenkins (0-3) from the game in less than an inning for the second-straight start, Cal Poly used eight hits to do their damage as the top three in the Mustangs' the order finished the inning 2-for-2.

In relief, junior Sean Bennetts put out the fire as he recorded the final out of the inning before going on to pitch six scoreless innings out of the pen in his second relief appearance. In all, Bennetts struck out three and walked three while scattering seven Mustang hits. Overall, the Mustangs came up with 18 hits while scoring 12 runs against the Tigers as they grabbed three more runs in the top of the eighth against freshman Justin Giovanonni. Overall, the top of the Mustang order finished with 10 of the 18 hits for Cal Poly with Peter Van Gansen recording four hits in five at bats while Jordan Ellis in the two-hole went 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI.

Offensively for the Tigers, Pacific was able to pound out 14 hits against Cal Poly's staff, but had trouble stringing them together as they plated just four runs on the day. Senior Tyler Sullivan led the way with a 4-for-5 effort at the top of the order as he scored a pair of runs including kick-starting Pacific's three-run seventh with his fourth and final hit of the day. Behind him, junior Brett Sullivan ended 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the two Sullivan's posted a pair of doubles in the third to score the first run of the game for the Tigers while Brett scored on an RBI single by junior Louis Mejia to cap the seventh.

The loss pushed the Tigers into new territory as their 13th loss marked the longest losing streak in program history.

The Tigers will look to recover and salvage the final game of their three-game series against Cal Poly on Sunday, March 8 when the two teams meet at 1:00 pm at Klein Family Field. All active and retired military personnel will receive complementary admission to the game for Pacific's Salute the Troops Sundays.
