Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Kendall Kenyon posted a double-double with 28 points and 21 rebounds, but Pacific's late comeback attempt fell short against Sacramento State in the WNIT First Round Thursday night, 87-79.
Hailie Eackles added 14 points while Desire Finnie scored 12. Senior guards Kristina Johnson and Madison Parrish each handed out six assists in their final games for Pacific. Erin Butler added nine points on three three-pointers made.
Sacramento State closed the first half with a 10-0 run and the Tigers hit two of their first 13 attempts in the second half as the Hornets seized control and forced the Tigers to play catch-up.
Pacific used an 11-1 run to pull within five, but the Tigers ran out of time, to fall to 21-10 on the season.
The Hornets, who entered the game leading the NCAA in turnover margin, steals and turnovers forced, scored 26 points of 22 Pacific turnovers.
The Tigers, who entered the game 13th in the NCAA in turnover margin, lost the turnover battle for just the fourth time in 31 games this season. Pacific tied its season-high with the 22 turnovers, only the second time Pacific committed over 20 miscues. After 16 in the first half, Pacific settled in against Sacramento's swarming pressure defense with just six second-half turnovers, with one coming on the final play of the game.
Pacific held Sacramento State to four under their average for turnover margin and forced, but the pressure took its toll as the Tigers shot 33 percent in the second half after connecting at 55 percent in the first.
Kenyon got on track early, with a pair of inside buckets. Erin Butler stroked a three for a 7-4 Pacific lead. Emily Simons scored inside twice as the Tigers led 13-8 four minutes in.
The Hornets answered back with a lay-up from Takara Burse, before Hailie Eackles found Simons in transition for a bucket. Kenyon hit a jumper in the paint, but Sacramento State's defense forced a pair of turnovers and a jumper from Hilliard tied the game at 17-17. Kenyon finished and then came up with a steal and run-out for a 21-17 lead with 10:29 to go in the first. The Hornets tied the game at 21-21 before Claire Conricode and Adella Randle-El traded three-pointers. After a defensive stop, Randle-El struck again to push Sacramento State out in front, 27-24.
Butler responded with a triple from the corner and then traded threes with Gretchen Harrigan as the game remained tied, 32-32. Kenyon and Desire Finnie scored in the paint, as the Tigers slipped ahead, 36-35.
However, the Hornets ripped off a 10-0 run over two minutes before Finnie and Kenyon hit jumpers before the half. The Tigers shot 55 percent in the first half, while Sacramento State hit 42 percent. The Hornets hit 6-of-18 from three-point range.
The Hornets opened the second half with a three, and after Kenyon scored inside, Sacramento State surged ahead with a 4-0 run to lead 56-44. Eackles connected on a three from the corner, but the Hornets hit six free throw to take their largest lead at 66-50.
Kenyon hit a jumper as the Tigers trimmed the deficit to 11, but the Randle-El added a three-pointer as the Hornets surged forward, 76-59. Then Eackles struck on a three in transition and added an and-one to pull Pacific within a dozen at 78-66 with 7:08 to play. Kristina Johnson and Finnie each tallied lay-ins as the Tigers closed to 82-72 with 4:16 remaining.
Eackles' three-pointer cut the deficit to six with 2:13 to go, as Pacific reeled off an 11-1 run. But the Tigers missed on their next two possessions, before Finnie cut the gap to five with 22 seconds left.
The Hornets added three free throws to settle on the final margin. Sacramento State improved to 17-15 while winning their first-ever post-season game, and will face Eastern Washington in the WNIT Second Round.
Kenyon's fourth career 20-rebound game is the most in program history, as her 49th career double-double extended her own program record. The senior finishes her Pacific career fourth on the all-time scoring list at 1442, with 1140 rebounds the program record. She also holds the program record for blocks, adding a rejection to finish with 172.
Gena Johnson logged four minutes in her final appearance for the Tigers, the fifth-year senior played in 22 games this season after rehabbing from her auto accident in 2013. With 1024 career points, she ranks 20th on the all-time scoring list, and
Kristina Johnson set the program record for games and wins, as she played in 84 victories in 129 games. She ranks eighth in Tiger history with 264 assists. Madison Parrish finished 14th in assists in just two years as a Tiger. She tallied 634 points in two years at Pacific. Claire Conricode's three pointer against the Hornets was the 45th of her career, as she entered the Tigers' top 30 leaderboard.
Pacific's season ends after a fourth-consecutive post-season, extending the program's best mark. The Tigers averaged 21 wins over the last four years.
