Box Score Portland, Ore. - Five Tigers scored in double-figures as the Pacific women's basketball team built an early lead and held on for an 80-78 win at Portland. Desire Finnie scored a career-high 11 points while Kendall Kenyon and Hailie Eackles each scored 15.
Erin Butler and GeAnna Luaulu-Summers each added 11, while Pacific also received eight points each from Madison Parrish and Kristina Johnson. Johnson added seven assists and Kenyon seven rebounds.
The Tigers sweep the season-series with Portland and improve to 19-7 overall, 11-4 in the West Coast Conference and move into a four-way tie for the second in the WCC.
Pacific shot 44 percent for the game (29-of-66), and 40 percent from three-point range (10-of-25). Portland erased a 16-point first-half deficit by shooting 56 percent in the second half. The Pilots fall to 4-22 overall, 2-14 in the WCC.
Pacific opened with a Kenyon lay-up, and a three-pointer by Luaulu-Summers gave Pacific a 10-5 lead. The Pilots answered with a pair of free throws and a lay-in from Cassandra Brown before Luaulu-Summers struck again from deep. Kristina Johnson and Kenyon each finished inside as part of a 7-0 Pacific run.
Eackles added a three-pointer as the Tigers stretched the lead to 22-11 with 9:44 to go in the half. But Pacific's fouls started to mount, and the Pilots cut the gap to nine from the free throw line.
With multiple Tigers on the bench to avoid a third foul in the first, Desire Finnie hit a pair of jumpers and added a three-pointer to spark Pacific and give the Tigers their largest lead at 36-20.
But Pacific didn't score again in the half, as Portland closed with a 6-0 run, as Ashley Gray posted a pair of lay-ups.
The Tigers took a 10-point lead into halftime, 36-26, as Pacific's bench scored 17 points in the first half. The Tigers shot 41 percent from the field in the first half (14-of-34) and forced 13 Portland turnovers, leading to 11 points.
In the second half, Portland trimmed the gap to five on a pair of drives. After a pair of free throws by Parrish and a lay-up from Finnie, Portland reeled off a 9-0 run to tie the game at 42-42.
Portland took their first lead at 44-42 on a jumper from Sara Zaragoza before Parrish drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key seconds later. Hannah Mattson hit a three for a 49-46 Portland lead, but Eackles answered nine seconds later.
After a three-pointer and a lay-up from Luttinen. Portland led by six at 55-49. Eackles drained a trey while being fouled, but the Pilots maintained a five-point lead with 9:59 to play, at 59-54.
Butler connected for a three, and after a Zaragoza jumper, Kenyon scored inside while being fouled to bring the Tigers within one, 61-60, before
Butler's three pointer put Pacific back on top, 63-62 with 7:59 to go.
Kristina Johnson answered a Luttinen bucket with added a jumper in the paint, and then added another finish at the rim and a pair of free throws as the Tigers led by five, 69-64, with 5:55 left following a 15-5 run.
The Tigers never trailed again, as Eackles answered a Cassandra Thompson bucket and Finnie tallied wit 4:28 to go for a 73-68 lead.
With 3:00 to play, Portland pulled within one at 73-72 on a pair of free throws from Cassandra Brown. But Kenyon finished inside on the other end and Eackles found Butler for a baseline jumper and a five-point lead with 1:59 to play.
Down three the Pilots picked up a pair of free throws, but Kenyon converted a lay-up in the paint with 35 seconds left for a three-point lead. The Tigers put the Pilots on the line for two, and Butler provided the final margin with a free throw.
Two more points each from Parrish and Johnson would have tied a program record for most players scoring in double-figures (seven, set against Bakersfield in 2010-11). Portland's 52 points in the second half were the most allowed by the Tigers this season.
At 11-4 in WCC play, Pacific moves into a tie for second in the conference standings, with BYU, San Diego and Saint Mary's all at 11-4. BYU and San Diego meet Saturday, while Pacific faces leader Gonzaga (15-0). Saint Mary's will visit Portland Saturday.
