Tucson, Ariz. - Desire Finnie scored a career-high 18 points, but the Pacific women's basketball team suffered a cold-shooting afternoon from behind the three-point arc, falling at Arizona 69-56 Saturday at the McKale Center.
The Tigers entered the game 13th in the NCAA in three-pointers made per game at 8.3, but only hit 4-of-18, as the Tigers fall to 4-4 on the season and lost to Arizona for the first time since the 1981 season.
Najah Queenland added 10 points, while Mauriana Clayton posted 12 rebounds. GeAnna Luaulu-Summers added seven points and four assists, while Hailie Eackles added seven points.
Pacific out-rebounded Arizona, 36-34, and held a 13-4 advantage in second-chance points, but the Wildcats hit 6-of-13 from three point range, and shot 46 percent for the game.
Erin Butler opened the Pacific scoring with a three-pointer for a 3-2 lead, but the Wildcats answered back with an inside bucket. Queenland finished with a drive to her right, and a jumper from Desire Finnie gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead. The Tigers and Wildcats traded the lead, until a pair of free throws by Unique Coleman tied the game at 11-11. Eackles gave the Tigers a 16-15 lead, but the Wildcats went up on a BELL lay-up. Queenland posted a put-back, but Arizona closed the quarter with a lay-up from Brianna Workman for a 19-18 lead.
Taryn Griffey scored to open the second, giving Arizona a three-point lead, but Finnie came right back with a pull-up jumper. Luaulu-Summers kept the Tiger within one with a mid-range jumper, but the Wildcats hit three of their first four from the field in the quarter. The Tigers went nearly four minutes amid a scoring drought, as Arizona stretched the lead to 28-22 before Finnie hit a floater in the paint. Unique Coleman drove to the rim to cut the Wildcats lead to 28-26, but Lauren Evans finished a floater from the paint as Arizona led 30-26 at the half.
Pacific was out-shot in the first half, 48 percent (13-of-27) to 31 percent (10-of-32), but the Tigers held a 20-17 lead in rebounding.
Queenland drained a three to open the third, but after holding the Wildcats without a bucket for over three minutes, Arizona reeled off five straight points on a three-pointer from Malena Washington and a run-out for a 35-29 lead with 6:27 to go in the third.
Finnie drove and finished to break the run, but Washington connected from deep again. Finnie dumped it off to Clayton for an inside deuce, but Washington answered back with a triple for a 43-34 lead with 2:58 to go in the third. The Tigers trimmed the gap to 43-38, but Arizona hit back-to-back three pointer for the first double-digit lead of the game at 49-38. The quarter closed with Finnie picking up three more from the free throw line.
In the fourth, Finnie cut the margin to six with a bucket inside, but Arizona answered back. After another three wouldn't fall, Evans hit a jumper to give the Wildcats an 11-point cushion at 57-46.
Luaulu-Summers hit a three-pointer to cut the gap to 60-52 with 2:26 to play. The Tigers put the Wildcats on the line for the final two minutes and cut the margin to seven, but the stream of free throws settled on the final score.
Washington led Arizona with 21 points, the lone Wildcat in double-figures. Arizona improves to 6-1 on the season. Pacific maintains a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with Arizona.
Pacific is shooting .358 from deep in wins this year (34-of-95) and .283 in their losses (28-of-99).
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 12, at home against San Jose State in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
