Women's Hoops Falls At San Diego In Second Half, 69-56

San Diego, Calif. - After the Pacific women's basketball team took a six-point lead into halftime lead, San Diego posted a big second half as the Tigers fell, 69—56 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Thursday.

Erin Butler led Pacific with 17 points, while Hailie Eackles added 12. Desire Finnie chipped in 12. Emily Simons grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

Pacific closed the first half with a 17-4 run, but the Toreros came out of halftime with a 22-6 third quarter to turn a 35-29 deficit into a 51-41 lead, and San Diego closed it out with a 18-15 fourth quarter.

Pacific falls to 8-6 overall, 1-2 in West Coast Conference play. San Diego improves to 12-1 overall, 2-0 in WCC action.

Simons answered a Maya Hood lay-up with a bucket inside, but USD built a 6-2 lead before Luaualu-Summers drove and finished. The Tigers tied the game from the free throw line as Eackles hit a pair.

Erin Butler knocked down a three for a 10-7 Pacific lead, but the Toreros tied the game with an and-one from Sydney Williams. Eackles drove to the rim for a bucket, but the Toreros responded with a pair of paint jumpers. Eli Lopez Sagrera added a lay-in just before the buzzer as San Diego led 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lopez Sagrera posted up for another basket to tie the game on the Tigers first possession of the second. But USD went on an 7-0 run as the Tigers were whistled for six fouls in 1:58. San Diego led by seven at 25-18 with 7:04 to go in the half before Butler kick-started a 17-4 run to close the period.

Butler's second three of the game three cut the gap to 25-21, and after a pair of free throws by Maya Hood, Butler struck again to tighten the contest to 27-24. She added one free throw and then another three-pointer to narrow the gap to one at 29-28. Najah Queenland drove and gave Pacific the lead at 30-29, with Eackles added three free throws. On the final possession of the half, the Tigers inbounded to a leaping Finnie in the paint, who hung and rattled it home to close the half.

The Tigers held USD to 10-straight field goal misses in the final seven minutes of the half, and out-rebounded the Toreros 11-4.

In the second quarter, Pacific shot 44 percent, 7-of-16, holding USD to 23 percent (3-of-13) while the Tigers out-rebounded the Toreros 13-7.

In the third quarter, San Diego shot 50 percent (9-of-18) whole holding Pacific to 14 percent (2-of-14), while the Toreros out-rebounded the Tigers 14-7.

San Diego opened the second half with a 9-0 run out of the break, as the fouls continued to rack up on the Tigers. Williams gave the Toreros a 38-35 lead before Luaulu-Summers hit a pair of free throws.

The Toreros connected on seven-straight field goals to take a 49-39 lead with 2:22 to go in the quarter. Finnie hung and hit, but the Tigers remained down 51-41 after three as USD shot 9-of-18 in the third and Pacific connected on just 2-of-14 with six turnovers.

San Diego scored the first six of the fourth quarter as the Toreros stretched the lead to as many as 21. The Tigers kept digging and cut into the deficit, but pulled no closer than 67-56 before the last bucket by San Diego.

Pacific will head to BYU for a contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific Time (2 p.m. Mountain). The game will air nationally on BYU-TV.
