Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Closing the books on a tough month of October, the Tigers suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at home in the Alex G. Spanos Center. For the Lions, the win marked their first victory in Stockton against the Tigers and just their second win overall in nine matches while snapping the Tigers' three-match winning streak in the all-time series. Overall, the Lions improved to 17-7 on the year and 8-4 in WCC play while Pacific dropped to 14-9 and 5-7 in conference action.
Set scores for the match were: 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.
Using just a handful of runs throughout the match, the Lions were able to secure the road victory against the Tigers in Stockton as LMU came up with its first win over the Tigers since the 2013 season.
Coming down to rotational matchups in the opening set, the Lions were able to exploit a hole in the Tigers' game to come away with 13 points in just one rotation to secure the first set victory. With Avery Bush behind the service line and the Tigers' top hitter in the backrow, LMU rallied off six-points during its first service run. After the Tigers' closed the gap through the next five rotations, the Lions again ran off a string of points, this time seven straight with Bush behind the service line, to put the Tigers' in a 10-point hole they could not recover from at 19-9.
Up one set and looking for two, it was a 4-0 run by the Lions that decided the second midway through the frame as LMU turned a one-point Tiger lead into a three-point hole for Pacific at 17-14. From there, the two teams traded points as the Lions took control of the match as LMU used a balanced attack and five team blocks to hold off a late charge by the Tigers' offensively.
Out of the break Pacific attempted to get back into the match only to be denied by a pair of runs by the Lions that once again were the difference in the set. Down four at 22-18, the Tigers put together their best sustained rally of the day as Pacific rolled off four-straight pionts with kills coming from three-different players to tie the set at 22-22. Despite the rally, the comeback was not to be as the Lions stopped the run with a kill from Jamie Lea before a pair of Pacific mistakes handed LMU the final two points of the set and with them, the match.
Overall, Elman, who started slow getting just four attempts in the first set, finished with 10 kills as the lone Tiger to reach double figures. She added 10 digs to finish with her 12th double-double of season. Sophomore libero, Katrin Gotterba, chipped in a team-best 12 digs in the match while sophomore Janie Feldsher added a team-high five blocks, tying her career high.
The Lions were led by Lea who posted 14 kills on .400 hitting to go with three blocks while Sarah Sponcil posted 13 kills on .379 hitting to go with four digs and three blocks. Rachelle Suaava added eight kills to go with a match-best six blocks while Hannah Tedrow finished with the double-double of 41 assists and a match-best 14 digs.
The Tigers hit the road against the top teams in the WCC next week as Pacific heads to San Diego on Thursday night before finishing the trip at #15 BYU on Saturday afternoon.
