Box Score San Diego, Calif. - The Tigers furious comeback attempt at San Diego came up just short, as the Pacific women's basketball team fell 56-52 on the road Saturday.
The Tigers closed the game with a 10-5 run, but a pair of three-point attempts in the final seconds wouldn't fall as the Tigers drop to 13-5 overall, 5-2 in West Coast Conference play. San Diego improves to 15-3 overall, 6-2 in WCC action.
Hailie Eackles finished with 13 points, while Kendall Kenyon tallied 12 points. Emily Simons chipped in eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. Eackles hit a trio of three-pointers while Kenyon added six rebounds.
Sophia Ederaine led San Diego with 21 points and 23 rebounds. The Toreros dominated the glass, holding a 60-30 edge in rebounding. Erderaine also was credited with 10 blocks.
The Tigers shot 28 percent for the game (19-of-69), including 3-of-17 from three-point range.
Pacific never led in the second half, but despite being down by as many as 13, charged back to hold two chances to tie or take the lead at the end.
The Tigers scored seven straight points in a 33 second span which began with 1:27 left to play. Turning a 51-42 deficit into two point game.
But three-ball attempts by Eackles with 12 seconds to go and Madison Parrish with three seconds to go wouldn't fall as the Tigers wrapped a road trip 0-2.
Eackles opened the game with a three in transition, but the Toreros answered with four-straight baskets inside. Pacific came up empty on six-straight possessions as the Toreros stretched the lead to 10-3 in the first four minutes.
After back-to-back San Diego buckets, Emily Simons scored on a put-back and Kenyon banked in a runner to cut the gap to 16-8. Najah Queenland added an and-one. but Maya Hood connected for USD.
San Diego stretched the margin to 12 from the free throw line, before Simons scored off the inbounds play.
Parrish found Simons slicing to the rim, but the Tigers traded 31-19 at halftime.
Pacific forced 14 San Diego turnovers but turned them into just five points as the Tigers shot 21 percent (6-of-29) from the field.
The Tigers defense held USD to 39 percent shooting (13-of-33), but the Toreros controlled the glass with a 33-12 margin.
Simons (3-for-3) led Pacific at the break with six points, Ederaine led USD with 13 points in the first half.
In the second half, Kenyon finished inside on the Tigers first two possessions. A second bucket off an inbound play pulled Pacific within eight at 33-25.
Eackles drove to the rack and Luaulu-Summers added an and-one, but the Tigers trailed 41-32 with 11:54 to play.
Desire Finnie added an and-one to pull Pacific within six. Maya Hood added a jumper as the Toreros led by eight.
Eackles knocked down a three-pointer to bring Pacific back within seven at 45-38 with 7:37 remaining.
Parrish cut the deficit to five with an and-one, but Malina Hood connected on a jumper to restore a nine-point lead at 49-40.
Pacific missed six straight shots over 4:30 before Queenland spun and scored inside with 2:04 to play.
Malina Hood hung and scored before Kristina Johnson drove and finished while being fouled.
After a steal, Kenyon scored inside to cut the margin to four at 51-47 with 1:03 to play. Johnson and Simons teamed for a steal and Simons lay-up brought Pacific within two at 51-49 with 58 seconds left.
Pacific forced a five-second call, but the Tigers missed a three-point attempt with 26 seconds left.
Malina Hood hit both ends of a one-and-one for a four-point San Diego lead with 20 seconds left.
Eackles drained a three-pointer with 10.7 seconds to go to give the Tigers another chance with time waning.
Katelyn McDaniel hit both free throws, but a deep three-point attempt from Parrish rimmed out and with three seconds left, and San Diego posted the rebound. Maya Hood settled on the final margin with a free throw.
For the second-straight season, Pacific fell in a hole and couldn't come all the way back at San Diego. Last year, the Tigers trailed by as many as 21 before rallying to force overtime at Jenny Craig Pavilion, but the Toreros pulled out an overtime victory.
The Tigers return home to face Portland on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
