Campos, Tigers Power Past App State, 6-1

Box Score

Hanover, N.H - The Pacific Tigers Field Hockey team registered a 6-1 victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Friday afternoon, buoyed by an offensive outburst that saw sophomore Ali Campos score four goals.

The performance represents the second most individual goals in a single game in program history, trailing only older sister Vianney's five goal contest against Davidson in 2006. The Tigers' five goal cushion also represents the most goals and the largest margin of victory for the program since 2009, when Pacific took down the Mountaineers 7-2 in the NorPac tournament. With the victory, the Tigers improve to 2-2 on the young season (1-1 NorPac East) while Appalachian State falls to 1-2 (0-1 NorPac East).

Appalachian State opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the contest as Dana Wetmore converted the penalty corner opportunity to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 advantage. The Tigers struck back in the tenth minute, as Ali Campos scored her first goal of the game off of a penalty corner with assists from Cristina Castella and Hannah Bettencourt to equalize the score as 1-1.

The Tigers took a 2-1 advantage into the halftime break after freshman Bryanna Flanagan scored her first collegiate goal on an open look after taking a centering pass from freshman Hannah Tvergyak.

The Tigers outshot Appalachian State 12-3 in the first period and held a 6-2 advantage on penalty corners.

In the second half, the Tigers offense exploded for four goals, led by a breakout half from Campos. Seven minutes into the second period the Tigers were awarded a penalty stroke, which Campos was able to put past Mountaineers goalie Cristina Ceppi for a 3-1 scoreline. The Tigers kept up the offensive intensity, firing shot after shot from the circle and keeping the pressure on the Mountaineers defense.

The barrage continued into the 52nd minute as Erica Gordon fed Campos a centering pass on a rush that the Mexico international was able to blast past Ceppi to seal her first career hat-trick and a 4-1 lead.

Less than four minutes later, freshman Savannah Burns scored unassisted for the Tigers, putting the Orange and Black up by a margin of 5-1.

Campos was not done yet as she scored for the fourth time on an odd-man rush to give Pacific a 6-1 cushion. Sophomore Nicole Laskosky was credited with the assist on the final goal of the contest.

The Tigers dominated the shot count, 27-8, while the penalty corner count was 10-4 in factor of Pacific. Campos recorded 12 shots, including eight on goal, while freshman Alicia Muiños fired five shots of her own. Overall, eight different Tigers recorded points in the conference clash.

The Campos sisters now hold a unique spot in the Pacific record book as both Vianney and Ali Campos are the only Tiger players to score more than three times in a single game. Sister Vianney scored all five in a 5-1 victory over Davidson on October 10th, 2006.

The Tigers will next be in action on Sunday in Boston as they take on Boston University. The game will begin at 12:00 pm Pacific time. Live video and stats streams for the contest will be available via PacificTigers.com
