No. 7 Men's Water Polo Cruises Past Cal Baptist

Davis, Calif. - Krisztian Laczkovics scored five goals while Ben Stevenson and Devon Thumwood each added three as the No. 7 Pacific men's water polo team downed Cal Baptist, 16-12, Friday at the Aggie Shootout.

Sean Grady and Simon Vogel each posted two markers, while Casey Fleming also tallied for the Tigers. Brady Moore made five saves in goal, while Chris Hughes posted one stop in the fourth quarter as Pacific improves to 7-3 on the season.

Laczkovics tied his career high with five goals, equaling a mark set last season against UC Irvine. Thumwood now has six goals in his last two games.

The Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter on goals from five different players. After Laczkovics and Stevenson opened with goals for a 2-0 lead, the Lancers answered with a tally from Cody Wetherbee. Grady finished from inside the two-meter, and Thumwood added a 6-on-5 goal before Casey Fleming's counter-attack goal provided a 5-1 margin.

The Lancers picked up one back before the end of the period, and held the Tigers to two goals in the second quarter. Vogel opened the scoring, but Cal Baptist narrowed the gap to 6-4 on goals from David Ring and Jake Jizmejian. Thumwood responded, tallying at the 3:23 mark to restore a three-goal cushion. But Eric Carnohan beat the buzzer at the end of the half to narrow the Tigers lead to 7-5.

The Lancers pulled within one to open the third quarter on a goal by Brent Teraoaka, but Stevenson and Grady answered on back-to-back Tigers' possessions as Pacific led 9-6. After a CBU goal, Vogel converted a 6-on-5 opportunity after the ejection, and Laczkovics stretched the lead to four at 11-7. The Lancers answered back as Teraoaka scored, but Laczkovics closed the third quarter with a 6-on-5 goal in Pacific's final possession of the period.

Laczkovics' fourth goal of the game provided a four-goal lead at 13-9, and came with a 6-on-5 advantage after Cal Baptist struck first to open the period.

Carnohan's second goal of the period cut the margin to three before Stevenson finished twice, and Laczkovics' fifth goal put the game out of reach at 16-11 with 1:27 to play. The Lancers snuck in a pair of goals before the final buzzer.

Joseph Moorman made 18 saves in goal for the Lancers, who fall to 8-6.

Pacific faces No. 18 Navy (12:40 p.m.) and Cal Lutheran (4:10 p.m.) on Saturday at the Aggie Shootout.
