Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper Josh Adachi posted seven saves for a clean sheet as the Pacific men's soccer team tied Sacramento State 0-0 Saturday in the exhibition finale at Knoles Field.
The Tigers finish the preseason at 1-0-1 after neither the Tigers nor Hornets could push a goal across in 110 minutes of action. Sacramento State out-shot Pacific 16-10 for the game, but the Tigers held a 3-2 advantage in extra time.
Adachi made five second-half saves and added two in overtime.
"He did what we expect from our goalkeeper: he made the saves when he needed to," head coach Ryan Jorden said of his keeper. "I thought we did a pretty good job defensively of keeping things predictable for him. But there were a couple moments where he was called upon and he stepped up, made himself a presence and kept balls out of the net."
In the 106th minute, Adachi denied Chimdum Mez from point blank range on the only shot on goal in the second OT session, to preserve the shutout.
"He had that same shot in the first half, so I kind of knew what he was looking to do. My defenders did a great job of leaving him only one place to shoot," Adachi said of the save.
Aside from Mez' chance in the second overtime, the Hornets other quality chance to score came in the 63rd minute. Cylus Sandoval's shot from inside the box to the right post was batted down at the line by Andrew Platon.
The Tigers had a trio of chances in the overtime, as Spencer Vue created on the right side and sent a cross in to Tyson Fox. Fox couldn't get enough on his sliding effort to steer it into the net in the 103rd minute. The Hornets' Teddy Sampson made a pair of saves, on shots by Vue and Gaku Lange, in the overtime.
Sacramento State used three goalkeepers, as James Del Curto made one first-half save in 45 minutes of play and Philip Bru added a second-half save in his 45 minutes. Sampson picked up his two saves in the overtimes, logging 20 minutes.
"It's our first game against a Division I team and we had moments where we looked uncertain. There were moments where we had confidence, and we looked good then. We have to identify some things that will make the game easier for us," Jorden added. "I think we need to do a better job of passing to create numerical advantages."
The Tigers will hit the road to open the regular season on Friday, August 29, at UC Riverside. Pacific will play six consecutive road matches before the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 27 against UC Santa Cruz.
