Box Score Stanford, Calif. - Closing out the 2014 season on the road at Stanford, the Pacific baseball team suffered a tough 5-2 loss to the Cardinal on Monday, May 19. The loss ended Pacific's year at 26-27 while the Cardinal moved to 27-23 overall.
After a weekend in which hits were tough to come by for the Tigers, Pacific was able to come up with 13 hits as all nine of the Tigers' starters were able to record a hit against the Cardinal led by senior John Haberman's 3-for-4 night. However, with the hits scattered over nine innings, the runs proved to be more difficult for Pacific to find as the Tigers tallied just a pair of runs in the game due to a little bad luck and a little defense by the Cardinal. Overall, Stanford was able to turn three double plays against the Tigers in the game, which helped to stymie Pacific's offense giving the Cardinal the chance to win.
Snake-bitten at the plate, the Tigers were equally unlucky in the field as a mistake with the glove led to extra outs for the Cardinal from which the plated four runs. On the mound, senior Kyle Crawford (2-2) could not catch a break as the extra opportunity provided the Cardinal the juice they needed to score four unearned runs in the third inning after the Tigers had scored a single run in the top of the frame. Even more frustrating for the senior in the inning was the fact that the Cardinal came up with RBI hits in the inning on otherwise good pitches as they found the outfield grass with bloop shots to do the bulk of the damage.
In the fourth, the Cardinal would tack on a fifth and final run with another bloop single, knocking Crawford from the game after 2.2 innings pitched having relinquished seven hits and one earned run. The run and the hit would be the last of the game for the Cardinal as Pacific's bullpen dominated the final 4.1 innings of action. Combining junior Michael Benson with seniors Kevin Hammann and Jason Taasaas, the Tigers' bullpen allowed just one Cardinal to reach base over the remainder of the contest while striking out four.
The pen's work gave Pacific a chance in the game but it was to no avail as Brett Hanewich (3-4) was able to do just enough throughout his nine innings of work to hold the Tigers at bay and earn the complete game victory. The lone blemishes for Hanewich came six innings apart as the Tigers' scored a run in the third on an RBI single by Murphy and again in the ninth on an RBI double by junior Tyler Sullivan. Overall, Murphy and Sullivan were the only other Tigers to record multiple hits outside of Haberman in the contest as the two juniors each picked up a pair of hits. Murphy added a triple to go along with Sullivan's double as Pacific finished the year with 24 triples, one shy of the program's record of 25 set back in 1975.
Pacific's 26 wins is the most for the Tigers since the 2010 season when Pacific finsiehd with 31 victories.
