Box Score Provo, Utah - In their first-ever game in Provo, Utah, the Pacific baseball team suffered a 10-1 loss at the hands of the host Cougars on Thursday, April 3. The loss for the Tigers dropped their record to 13-18 overall and 4-6 in WCC play while BYU improved to 11-20 on the year and 3-7 in conference action.
Form the outset of the game the Tigers knew it was not going to be there night as everything that could go the Cougars way appeared to do so. Making the most of their good fortunes the Cougars pounded out 15 hits and scored 10 runs to hand Pacific its worst loss of the season. Suffering the loss for the Tigers was junior Michael Benson (0-4) who picked up his first start of the season as the Tigers pitched on short rest due to the early week series and a doubleheader the Sunday prior. Despite not having his best stuff, Benson also suffered from bad luck as the Cougars scored runs in four of the five innings of his outing with the help of both the Sun and misplays in the field by the Tigers. In both the second and the third innings of play, the Tigers lost balls in the Sun that resulted in extra base hits and eventually runs for the Cougars while an error in the fourth helped spur on a four run inning for BYU.
With things going bad for the Tigers in the field, the game proved to be the exact opposite on the other side of the field for the Cougars as BYU's Desmond Poulson (3-2) held Pacific's bats in check for 8.0 solid innings. Holding the Tigers without a hit for the first six innings of play, Poulson allowed his first hit of the game on a single through the right-side by sophomore Gio Brusa in the first at bat for the Tigers in the seventh. Pacific would threaten for a big inning, but a mistake on the basepaths cost the Tigers a run at the plate and helped Poulson limit the damage in the inning to just one run. Poulson saw his shutout come to an end when his catcher made a bad throw to third on a back-pick play with the bases loaded that allowed junior Robby Mansfield to score on the error.
Overall, Pacific ended up picking up five late hits in the contest with Brusa notching a pair in his final at bats as the only Tiger to record multiple hits. With the Tigers struggling at the plate Pacific sophomore Brett Sullivan saw his 21-game hitting streak and 35-game on-base streak come to an end after finishing the game 0-for-4. The hitless night marked just the second time this season the second-year shortstop was held with out a hit and the first time in 2014 he did not reach base safely.
For the Cougars, Brennon Lund led the way with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate as he reached base safely five times in the game after being hit by the very first pitch of the game. Dillon Robinson, Bret Lopez, and Jarrett Jarvis each picked up three hits as the Cougars posted 15 hits in 40 official trips to the plate.
Pacific and BYU meet for the second time on Friday, April 4, at Larry Miller Field as the game is scheduled for 5:00 pm PST.
