Pacific Drops A Close One To Stanford, 3-2

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Playing their lone contest of the week, the Tigers came up just short of a comeback effort against Stanford on Tuesday, April 29 at Klein Family Field as the Cardinal prevailed, 3-2. The loss for the Tigers ended their eight-game homestand at 6-2 as Pacific fell to 23-22 on the year while the Cardinal improved to 19-19.

Falling behind early, the Tigers were unable to finish off a ninth inning rally against the Cardinal as Pacific came up just short to fall by one run. Pacific fell behind early in the contest as the Cardinal were able to post three runs on the board against starter John Haberman (3-2) before the Tigers' offense could figure out the Cardinal pitching. Stanford struck for a single run in the top of the first after a one-out walk came into score on an RBI double into the left field corner by Alex Blandino.

The Cardinal added two more in the top of the sixth as they were able to load the bases with no outs in the inning before finally scoring a pair on a two-out single. Junior Bryce Lombardi was able to get the first two outs of the inning for the Tigers but gave up a single to Tommy Edman through the right side as it just got by junior Jimmy Gosano who laid out in full extension to attempt to cut down the hit. The hit would be the only one given up by Lombardi as he induced a popup to end the inning without further damage.

From the final out of the sixth until the end of the game, Pacific's pen was nearly perfect as the Cardinal mustered just one hit against junior Michael Benson, senior Kyle Crawford, and freshman Vince Arobio over the final three innings of play. The bullpen's work allowed the offense a chance to make a comeback as Pacific scored a run in the seventh on a bases loaded ground out by freshman McKay Koissian.

Down 3-1, the Tigers mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth inning when senior Erik Lockwood doubled to left center before coming home on a double down the left field line by freshman Parker Klein. Klein's double down the line was his third hit of the night as the freshman finished 3-for-4 to one-up his cousin, Jack Klein, who finished 2-for-4 as Stanford's designated hitter.

The rally, however, was not to be for the Tigers as Pacific called upon junior Tyler Sullivan to pinch hit in the ninth, only to see a line drive to the left side find the glove of Stanford's third basemen, Blandino. Sullivan took most of the night off as he nursed a sore ankle suffered from the game prior against San Diego.

Pacific had its chances in the night to make a game of it with the Cardinal as the Tigers loaded the bases in the fifth only to be denied by Cardinal reliever, Chris Viall. Viall entered in relief of Logan James (1-2) who earned the win after giving up one hit in four innings and left after with a 1-0 lead upon the completion of his scheduled innings of work in the midweek contest. Chris Castellanos (1) picked up his first save of the season despite allowing a run and three hits as he worked the final 2.2 innings of the game for the Cardinal.

The Tigers will be off from action for nearly two weeks before returning to the field on Friday, May 9, in Portland to take on the Pilots in a pivotal WCC matchup.
