Tigers Suffer A Tough Loss To Nevada

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Playing their final home game of their nine game homestand, the Pacific baseball team could not get out of its own way en route to a tough 8-4 loss to Nevada on Tuesday, Mar. 4. The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-7 on the year while the Wolf Pack improved to 5-7.

Early on the Tigers struggled to find their way against the Wolf Pack as walks and missed chances at the plate cost Pacific to start the game. Opening the first, Nevada took advantage of three walks to pick up the first run of the game. The Wolf Pack scored on a double play ball that helped Pacific manage the damage as the first run would be the lone tally of the inning as freshman Jordon Gonzalez pitched his way out of the remaining jam. He would give way to Kyle Crawford in the second as the senior got Pacific out of a second jam, unscathed.

Trailing by one and just missing on chances to get back the run relinquished in the first, the Tigers came up big in the bottom half of the third when junior Tyler Sullivan took matters into his own hands. Leading off the inning, Sullivan sent the first pitch he saw from Wolf Pack starter, Tyler Wells, deep over the right field fence for his first home run of the season. In the inning, the Tigers would rack up five hits in the inning and run Wells from the game, but mistakes on the base paths would keep Pacific from scoring again, giving the momentum back to the Wolf Pack.

After holding the Tigers to just one run in the third, Nevada would get the run back and more in their very next at bat when a leadoff hit batter came back to bite Crawford. After moving the runner to second with a bunt, the Wolf Pack brought home their second run of the game with a sharp single down the right field line. The run was the first run charged to the senior lefty's totals on the year. He would give up a second, unearned, run later in the frame after mistakes in the field gave the Wolf Pack new life in the inning.

Pacific would show a flash of brilliance in the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers came up with three runs on four hits. Again, it was T. Sullivan that got things going as the junior bunted his way on base before moving all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He would trot home on an RBI single to right by sophomore Brett Sullivan, the third hit of the game for the younger Sullivan. B. Sullivan would score one batter later as he raced around the bases on a double down the line to right by sophomore Gio Brusa. The final run of the inning and the game for the Tigers would come two batters later on an RBI single by junior Taylor Murphy.

Despite taking the lead for the first time in the game with their big fifth, the win was not to be for the Tigers as the Wolf Pack got to Pacific's pen for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. The five runs came on four hits and two walks, with the game winning runs coming on a flared double down the right field line by Justin Bridgman that cleared the bases with two-outs in the inning. Bridgman finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.

In all, the Tigers outhit the Wolf Pack, 11-to-9, but committed four errors and walked eight to self inflict much of the damage done to them. B. Sullivan led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort while T. Sullivan and senior Erik Lockwood each finished with two hits. T. Sullivan finished his night with an RBI an two runs scored.

Senior Jason Taasaas (0-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers in relief as he went 0.2 innings while giving up three hits and five runs. The win went to Colby Blueberg (2-0) out of the pen as he threw 3.2 innings while giving up just one hit to the Tigers. Neither starter factored into the decision for their respective teams.

Pacific is back in action on Thursday, Mar. 6 in San Jose, Calif. when the Tigers take on San Jose State at 6:00 pm to start the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament.
