Riverside, Calif. - Rebecca Wright scored three goals, and Gracie Smith added two in overtime, but the Cal Baptist women's water polo team posted a 10-9 sudden death overtime win over Pacific Saturday in Riverside.
The Tigers fell behind in double overtime twice, but Smith answered each time for force a third overtime period before Cal Baptist's Morgan Barrow netted the game winner.
Brydie Pye added two goals, while Megan Torre and Taylor Adair also scored for Pacific. Pacific goalkeeper Meghan Nee and CBU netminder Meghan Rowland each recorded 11 saves.
Wright opened the scoring with a 6-on-5 goal in the first quarter, but Morgan Barrows evened it up for CBU with 90 seconds to go in the quarter, and Brie Tryon beat the clock for a 2-1 Lancers lead with one second left on the quarter clock.
In the second, CBU's Christina Young gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead before Wright tallied again and Brydie Pye knotted the score at 3-3. Wright completed the hat trick at the 1:19 mark for a 4-3 lead at the break.
In the third, the Tigers stretched the lead to 5-3 as Megan Torre beat Rowland on Pacific's first possession. But CBU answered with a 6-on-5 goal from Hannah Evans. Pye tallied again on the Tigers' next attack as Pacific took a 6-4 lead into the fourth.
Hannah Tamimi cut Pacific's lead to one before Taylor Adair provided a 7-5 lead. On a five-meter penalty, Evans cut the deficit in half, and with 3:35 left, Evans tied the game at 7-7. Neither team could find the winner in regulation as the gave moved to OT.
Barrows put the Lancers up one in the first overtime session with a goal at the 1:49 mark, but the Tigers tied in the second OT on a goal from Smith. Evans again scored for a 9-8 Lancer lead, but with 42 seconds left, Smith forced sudden death with her second goal.
But the Lancers earned a 6-on-5 advantage and Barrow finished for the 10-9 Cal Baptist win.
Evans and Barrow each finished with three goals for Cal Baptist, which also received goals from Laura Kocsis and Courtney Menard.
The Tigers fall to 11-13 on the year, 1-2 in Golden Coast Conference play while CBU improves to 17-9 overall and 1-2 in GCC action.
Pacific is back in action on Friday, April 4, against Fresno Pacific
