Ninth Inning Rally Does In Pacific At Nevada

Box Score

Reno, Nev. - For the second time in as many games, the Tigers suffered a gut-wrenching loss in the ninth inning of their contest, falling 7-6 at Nevada on Tuesday, Mar. 11. The Tigers fell to 8-11 on the year while the Wolf Pack improved to 7-9.

Playing their final tuneup before heading into conference play, the Tigers came up on the shortend of another one-run ballgame as the Wolf Pack were able to score three times in the bottom of the ninth to steal the game from Pacific. The fatal runs came with two outs in the ninth for the Tigers when Trenton Brooks delivered a single through the leftside with the bases loaded, plating the tying and winning runs on the play. Prior to Brooks' hit, the Wolf Pack had cut Pacific's lead to just one run at 6-5 with back-to-back doubles to start the inning.

Prior to the ninth, the two teams had combined for nine runs with only one being officially charged against the pitchers as mistakes allowed eight runs to come in unearned. Pacific, as it has done in each of the last four games, started the contest off with a run in its first at bat. Taking advantage of a third strike in the dirt, junior Tyler Sullivan picked up a free base to leadoff the game, eventually coming into score the first run on a pair of ground balls to the middle infield.

In the bottom half of the inning the Tigers gave back the free run and then some as a two-out error gave the Wolf Pack new life in an otherwise dead inning. The mistake immediately proved costly when the Wolf Pack netted a single and a double which each drove home two runs in the inning.

Three innings later, the Tigers came back with a four spot of their own which was bolstered by an infield error to start the inning. After two Tigers were hit by pitches to load the bases, senior Erik Lockwood came up with a single down the first base line to plate a pair and get the rally rolling. The Tigers came up with a third run on a ground ball to short before taking the lead with back-to-back triples by freshman Danny Mayer and senior Curtis Gomez. The triple by Mayer was his first career three-bagger while it was the second of the season for Gomez.

The Tigers aded an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to take the 6-4 lead, but, ultimately it would not be enough.

With the lead, Pacific continued shutting down the Wolf Pack offense, pitching out of mini-jams throughout the afternoon's contest until the fateful ninth inning. Junior Bryce Lombardi (0-1) was charged with the loss as he gave up one earned run and allowed one inhearited runner to come in to score in 0.2 of an inning of work. Senior Kyle Crawford, who started the game for the Tigers, picked up the no decision after pitching 5.2 innings of work while giving up seven hits, four unearned runs, and walking four.

The Wolf Pack's Adam Whitt (1-2) was awarded the win by his offense after pitching the final two innings of the contest while giving up two hits and one run. Starter Tyler Wells did not factor into the decision despite lasting just 3.2 innings while giving up four hits and five runs, only one of which was earned.

Offensively, the Tigers picked up 10 hits with T. Sullivan, Lockwood, and Mayer each recording two hits on the day. Pacific left 10 on base in the loss, including seven in scoring position with three being left at third over the final three innings of play.

Pacifi will look to shake off its recent woes in conference play as the Tigers head to Malibu, Calif. to take on Pepperdine to begin West Coast Conference play. The Tigers first game back in the WCC since 1971 begins at 3:00 pm on Friday, Mar. 14.
