Mistakes Prove Costly As Pacific Falls To No. 2 Oregon State

Box Score

Tempe, Ariz. - Facing off against the No. 2 team in the nation, the Pacific baseball team made too many costly mistakes as they dropped a 14-6 decision to Oregon State on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Husker Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The loss dropped Pacific to 1-2 on the year while the Beavers improved to 3-0 overall and with it, secured the top record at the four-team tournament.

The day started off rough for the Tigers and did not improve as Oregon State took advantage of every misstep by Pacific in the field and on the mound to run away with the win. Missed pitches proved too much to overcome as the Tigers walked the leadoff batter in each of the first three innings, resulting in scores for the Beavers. In addition, Oregon State's Michael Conforto was unbeatable at the plate as he drove home five runs in the game including the first run of the contest in the opening frame and a pair in the three-run third. He finished the night 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored.

The three runs in the third inning for Oregon State bookended a score for the Tigers who pushed across a single run in the second on an RBI single by sophomore J.J. Wagner. Despite the efforts to get back into the game, Pacific fell behind for good in the fourth when the Beavers broke the contest open with a four spot, using a pair of Tiger errors and a trio of walks to do all of their damage. They would proceed to core in five-straight innings, putting a crooked number on the board in four-consecutive innings to take total control of the night. The Tigers had their chances in the fourth to stay close, loading the bases with no outs only to hit into a rally kiling double play.

Offensively, the Tigers weren't able to get going against Scott Schulz (1-0) as the senior held Pacific's hot bats in check for seven solid innings. Pacific stole back a little of the momentum for the impending matchup on Monday morning as they young Tigers' took advantage of extended playing time with four runs in the ninth. Helped out with extra outs, the Tigers strung together four-straight singles beginning with senior Curtis Gomez. He was followed by the freshmen as Jimmy Boras, Parker Klein, and Miles Haddad each slapped singles onto the outfield grass with Klein and Haddad picking up their first collegiate RBI. Klein's single was his second of the game as he went 2-for-2 after entering the contest as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

Senior Erik Lockwood continued his clutch hitting on the night as he went 2-for-2 before giving way to his replacement in the sixth inning. Hot hitting sophomore Brett Sullivan cooled slightly to the tune of just one hit in three trips to the plate as he singled in his first at bat of the night.

Behind Conforto, Dylan Davis was nearly as good as he drove in three RBI on 1-for-4 hitting. At the top of the order Jeff Hendrix went 1-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored after walking in each of his first three at bats.

On the mound, sophomore Jake Jenkins (0-1) suffered the loss as he went 3.1 innings while giving up three hits and eight runs, four of which were earned. In addition, the second-year start struck out three but walked seven as Pacific's staff walked 10 on the night. Pacific's most effective pitcher proved to be freshman Stuart Bradley who went 3.0 hitless innings to finish the game in his first collegiate appearance.

The two teams lock horns for a second time on Monday, Feb. 17 at 10:00 am PST as they close out play at the Husker Classic.
