Box Score Long Beach, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team shot a season-high 52 percent and held on for a 67-62 win over New Mexico State Friday at the Beach Classic Friday at Walter Pyramid. Emily Simons tied her career-highs with 16 points and six rebounds, while Unique Coleman added a season-high 12 points and six boards.
Kristina Johnson chipped in eight points while handing out seven assists and Kendall Kenyon tallied eight points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes while fighting foul trouble.
The Tigers opened with a hot hand and built a 19-point lead before New Mexico State staged its comeback. But the Tigers slammed the door to win their fifth straight and improve to 8-2 on the season. Pacific snaps New Mexico State's four-game win streak as the Aggies fall to 4-6.
Erin Butler and Hailie Eackles each finished with six points for the Tigers. After struggling from deep in the last two games, the Tigers hit 10-of-19 (53 percent) from three-point range for the game as five different players nailed threes.
Eackles drained a three on the Tigers' first possession, and put Pacific up 6-3 with another triple from the top of the key. After a pair of jumpers from the Aggies, the Tigers reeled off a 19-0 run.
Simons scooped in a go-ahead basket and Unique Coleman added a three-pointer for a 11-7 lead.
GeAnna Luaulu-Summers scored while being fouled and the Tigers posted back-to-back steals leading to run-out baskets by Simons and Luaulu-Summers.
Conricode and Erin Butler added three-pointers as the Tigers led 25-7 with 11:30 to go in the half.
Pacific connected on nine of their first 13 shots.
Coleman added another three-pointer as the Tigers maintained an 18-point margin at 31-13.
The Aggies chipped away as Abby Scott's three pulled New Mexico State within 11 at 31-20. Parrish answered with a drive to the rim and finished while being fouled. Butler drained another three-pointer while Simons finished in transition to put the Tigers back up 38-22.
Pacific carried a 38-23 lead into halftime as the Tigers shot 56 percent in the frame (15-of-27) to New Mexico State's 35 percent (10-of-29).
The Tigers had struggled from long distance in their previous two games, but connected on 8-of-12 from deep in the first half.
Coleman scored nine first-half points on a trio of three-pointers.
Kendall Kenyon tallied inside to open the second half, but the Aggies answered back with a three-pointer from Moriah Mack. Simons posted a pair of buckets while Kristina Johnson added a three-pointer as Pacific led 47-31.
Zaire Williams trimmed Pacific's lead to 11 with a three before Coleman drove for a basket in response.
Najah Queenland zipped a pass in to Simons in the paint for a quick bucket and Johnson added a three to restore a 16-point lead with 11:20 to play.
Williams hit a pair of three-pointers to bring the Aggies within 63-52. Mack tallied to cut the Tigers lead to within single digits at 63-54 with 3:31 to play.
The Aggies reeled off a 14-1 run to pull within 63-60 with 90 seconds left. Pacific posted a stop on defense, and Kenyon finished with a floater from the paint.
A pair of free throws trimmed the gap to three again, before Johnson found Kenyon in the paint for a bucket to put Pacific's lead out of reach.
The Tigers handed out 18 assists on 27 field goals, and connected on 27 of 52 attempts from the field.
Pacific will face host Long Beach State on Saturday at 5 p.m. (approximate) in the Tigers' second game at the Beach Classic.
