Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Field Hockey team finished its season with a 5-2 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday, with freshman Alicia Muiños and sophomore Nicole Laskosky each recording a pair of goals to lead the Pacific attack. The Tigers took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break, with the scores buoying the program to its seventh win, the most in a single season since the 2007 campaign. The win secures 5th place in the NorPac tournament for the Tigers.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the 18th minute, as Muinos scored off a penalty corner. Junior Hannah Bettencourt and freshman Hannah Tvergyak each received assists on the score. Less than two minutes later, Laskosky got on the scoreboard, punching in a goal after Sidney Brooks found the forward in front of the goalmouth to extend the Pacific lead to 2-0. In the 26th minute, Muiños scored unassisted, from the center of the circle, shooting to the upper left of the goal to make the scoreline 3-0. Exactly a minute later, Leah Cofer took a pass from Axelle Steffen and was able tap a shot into an open net, as Appalachian State goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi was caught off-guard for a 4-0 Pacific lead.
The Tigers also took a 11-5 lead in shots into the halftime break, while the teams were tied 4-4 on the corner count.
In the second half, freshman Cristina Castella connected with Laskosky on a score, as the sophomore from Alberta was able to beat the Appalachian State defense and shoot easily towards an open left side of the cage for a 5-0 advantage for the Orange and Black.
Tigers starting goalkeeper sophomore Laura Pujade was not challenged by the Appalachian State attack, and the Tigers made a goalie substitution in the 26th minute, summoning redshirt junior Molly Macierz for the final 43 minutes of competition. Macierz made three saves in relief of Pujade.
In the final ten minutes of the contest, Appalachian State was able to get two scores from Jessi Stuart and Jordyn Warren to pull the score to 5-2. Undaunted, Pacific kept up the pressure defensively for the duration of the contest to secure the victory in the season finale.
Coach Andy Smith was pleased with his team's performance in the last game of the season saying, "It was a great effort and I thought team played extremely well. It was nice to see a full team performance and contributions from some fresh faces."
