Prusa's Header Gives Men's Soccer Win Over Portland

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Behind a strong effort at each end of the pitch, the Pacific men's soccer team posted its first West Coast Conference victory in program history, 2-1, over Portland Friday. Alec Prusa's header in the 82nd minute provided the game-winning goal.

Tristan Blackmon scored his eighth goal of the season to keep his lead in the WCC scoring race, while Josh Adachi made six saves in goal for Pacific.

The Tigers, in their first season of Division I men's soccer since 1985, responded to a Portland equalizer in the 81st minute to break through for their first win as members of the WCC.

Portland's Eddie Sanchez, who entered the match second in the WCC in scoring with five goals, had the first chance to give his team the lead, receiving a pass in the box and attempting to finish. Prusa covered the goal and blocked it off the line, and when the rebound came to Sanchez, Adachi recovered for the save. Sanchez got to the loose ball again, but was denied by Adachi once more.

Julio Cervantes had a pair of chances for Pacific, including a sharp-angle shot in the 19th minute and a shot just high in the 25th.

The Pilots out-shot Pacific 12-4 in the first half, but the two sides remained scoreless into the second half.

In the 55th minute, Blackmon played a ball up for Lee, who spun and sent it on into the box for Blackmon, who finished the give-and-go for his eighth tally of the year.

Pacific picked up the intensity, with scoring chances from Lee and Cervantes as well as a shot from Tyson Fox in the ensuing five minutes.

But as the Tigers turned their focus to defending a one-goal lead, Portland increased the pressure. Erik Edwardson's header on the doorstep sailed high, and the Pacific defense blocked a pair of shots in the 79th minute.

In the 80th, the Pilots drew level as Hugo Rhoads sent a ball into the box, and as it was batted around, Michael Escobar one-timed it out of mid-air into the goal for the equalizer. The goal was Escobar's fifth of the season.

Pacific charged back, as Lee's shot was blocked for a corner kick. Esteban De La Torre sent the cross in, and Prusa stepped up and headed it down for his first goal of the year and a 2-1 lead with 7:59 to play.

Adachi held Portland at bay, with three saves in the final minutes, included a stop off a header by Escobar following a Pilots corner kick.

Pacific is now 3-12-0 overall and 1-3-0 in WCC play. The Tigers are at Gonzaga, Sunday at 1 p.m.
