Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Field Hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to UC Davis in the first round of the NorPac Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Pacific Field Hockey Turf. The Tigers fall to 6-13 while UC Davis improves to 5-13 with the victory.
The Tigers and Aggies battled through a scoreless first half, with UC Davis controlling the shot advantage 11-2 and also a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Pacific had its best scoring opportunity in the 27th minute after being awarded a penalty corner but Ali Campos had her shot attempt blocked. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Pujade kept the Aggies off the scoreboard throughout the first half, making seven saves in the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, the Tigers struck first for a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Sidney Brooks connected on her first goal of the season, taking a pass from Ali Campos and tapping a shot into the cage from the front of the goal mouth, past UC Davis goalkeeper Brianna Sooy.
The Aggies were able to equalize just over four minutes later after a penalty corner was awarded to UC Davis. Kayla Wigney inserted a penalty corner to Jamie Garcia, who saw her initial shot attempt saved by Pujade. The rebound found Wigney, who punched it in past the sophomore goalkeeper to make the score 1-1.
The Tigers had a great scoring opportunity in the 64th minute as Kyleigh Morrison shot high and Campos had her shot attempt blocked. On th e counter attack, Wigney took a pass from Kristin Rodgers and was able to get past the Pacific defense, finding Sophia Lisaius. Lisaius was able to shoot past an empty net after Pujade was caught out of position and UC Davis took a 2-1 lead into the final minutes of regulation.
The Tigers made things interesting as Pujade was pulled for an extra attacker. Pacific earned a penalty corner in the 68th minute but Morrison, the extra field player, had her attempt saved by Sooy and UC Davis regained posession, able to bring the ball outside the striking circle to preserve the victory for the designated visitors.
The Tigers fall to the fifth place game at 9:00 am against Appalachian State. UC Davis has advanced to the semifinals against the No. 1 seed in the West, Stanford. That contest is slated for 2:00 pm.
