Box Score Boone, N.C. - The Pacific Field Hockey (5-11, 1-3 NorPac East) team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Appalachian State Mountaineers (4-12, 1-3 NorPac East) on Saturday afternoon at Madcock Field on the Appalachian State campus. The Tigers and Mountaineers traded jabs throughout the contest, with the hosts eventually taking the victory on a penalty stroke in the final minutes of the second half, despite a hat-trick from Pacific sophomore Ali Campos. Campos now has 14 goals, the most in a single season for a Tiger since her older sister Vianney had 32 in the 2006 campaign.
Appalachian State got on the scoreboard first, just 1:08 into the contest, as Dana Wetmore scored to put Mountaineers up 1-0 early. Immediately following the score, the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner but sophomore Kyleigh Morrison had three shot attempts go unfulfilled.
The Tigers would convert their next scoring opportunity as Campos took a pass from junior Kelsey Gulledge and found the back of the cage in the 13 minute mark to equalize the scoreline at 1-1. The Mountaineers regained the lead in the 21st minute as Micaela Diedericks scored past goalkeeper Laura Pujade for a 2-1 advantage.
Campos got the Tigers level yet again in the 28th minute, scoring off an assist from Morrison for her 13th goal of the season. The Tigers regained the lead before the halftime break as freshman Axelle Steffen scored her first career goal in the 31st minute for a 3-2 Pacific advantage.
Campos completed the hat trick in the second half, scoring her 14th of the season in the 49th minute to give the Tigers a two goal cushion at 4-2.
Appalachian State called a timeout following the score, and the momentum shifted in favor of the Mountaineers for the remainder of the contest, as they scored three unanswered goals to steal a victory over the Orange and Black.
In the 58th minute, Savanna Sheridan scored to cut the Tiger lead to 4-3. In the 64th minute, Jessi Stuart scored off a penalty corner to level the scoreline with just over five minutes to play.
In the 68th minute, Appalachian State was awarded a penalty stroke and Laura Malinoski converted, putting the Mountaineers ahead 5-4 with just over 90 seconds left to play to send the Mountaineers to their fourth victory of the season, leveling the series with the Tigers at one win apiece.
The Tigers lost despite out-shooting the Mountaineers 21-10. Pacific also held a 7-6 advantage in corners. Freshman Savannah Burns fired seven shots while Kyleigh Morrison had five to lead the Tigers.
