Tigers Win Homecoming Thriller, 3-2 In Overtime

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Tiger field hockey team capped off an exciting day that started with a dedication of their new facility with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over local rival UC Davis. Ali Campos scored unassisted to secure victory for the Tigers and end a four-game losing skid. With the victory, the Tigers even the season series with the Aggies and pull to 5-9 on the season. UC Davis dropped the rematch and falls to 4-10 on the season. If the two teams meet again, it will be at the NorPac tournament.

The Orange and Black got on the scoresheet first, with Alicia Muiños putting back her own rebound and scoring past Aggies freshman goalkeeper Briana Sooy to open the scoring. The Tigers would survive a flurry of shots by the Aggies without surrendering a goal, as sophomore goalkeeper Laura Pujade made three saves for Pacific in the first half.

The scoreline would hold at 1-0 going into the halftime break, but UC Davis held a 7-3 shot advantage. For the second straight game, the Tigers surrendered an early goal in the second period as Agustina Singh scored off a penalty corner for the Aggies in the 36th minute.

Pacific immediately called time out and regrouped, but the Aggies took the lead after Kayla Wigney bested the Tigers midfield and defense and scored on a breakaway, beating Pujade to the lower right corner of the cage.

Sensing the game potentially slipping away, Pacific subbed Pujade out for a kicking back, as Kyleigh Morrison put on the goalkeeper jersey and assumed duties in the backfield. Just 40 seconds after making the switch, the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner. The initial shot attempt by Campos was blocked, but the deflection found its way onto Morrison's stick and the sophomore shot high past Sooy to equalize. The goal set off a wild celebration by the Pacific side, who mobbed Morrison, still wearing Pujade's orange goalkeeper jersey, in realization of the rareness of the feat.

"It's pretty rare that a goalkeeper gets an opportunity to take a shot.", said Morrison. "I got the quick rebound and tried to get a shot off. I knew we needed it. I'm really proud of the way we worked today."

With the score tied, Pujade returned to her post. Despite a potential penalty corner goal by Savannah Burns that was waved off as high and a lunging shot attempt by Campos, the two teams entered the 7 on 7 golden goal overtime period.

In the overtime, Pacific went to work defensively, blocking a Davis shot in the 71st minute while Pujade made a key save in the 75th minute, setting the state for Castella and Campos to connect on one of the biggest plays of the year for the Tigers. Castella set up a great ball for Campos, who ran towards the near post of the goal and converted on a lunging backhand, cross-cage shot to send the Tigers to a sudden victory and set off a  celebration on homecoming weekend.

"Cris (Castella) gave me an amazing ball,", said Campos. "The lane on the left opened and I tried to eliminate the defender, shot on a reverse chip and thankfully it went in."

"I think this was a massive win for us," said Head Coach Andy Smith. "I was excited for Ali (Muiños) who got the first goal. It's been something she's been working on in practice and she's so good when she takes those early shots." Smith continued, "For Kyleigh, we put her in as a kicking back and she scored a goal. I can't remember the last time a goalkeeper scored a goal in an NCAA game.

"For Ali Campos, I was thrilled for her to win this game. We're getting on a plane on Tuesday night to Liberty. We'll put our best foot forward and see where we can go from there.", added Smith.

The Tigers will next be in action on Thursday, October 23rd against Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. The game time will be 1:00 pm and the contest will be broadcast live online via the Big South Network. Visit PacificTigers.com for the streaming and live stats links.
