LMU Takes WCC Opener From Men's Soccer

Box Score

Los Angeles - The Pacific men's soccer team fell in a wild West Coast Conference opener at Loyola Marymount on Friday, 4-0, in a match that finished 10 men a side.

The first half of the match saw both teams at full strength, with LMU striking for an early goal by Sebastian De Rada. The Tigers entered the break down 1-0 and being out-shot 15-6. In the second half, the game turned far from ordinary, as a second yellow card put Pacific on a man advantage for 16 minutes before another player was sent off and LMU pushed out their margin of victory.

"I'm proud that we showed we can play at the standard with the defending conference champions," head coach Ryan Jorden said. "The mistakes that we made can be corrected and I am pleased that we continue to have belief in our quality and the way we are trying to play."

In the seventh minute on the break, De Rada chipped a pass through the Tigers' defense and Alvarado Madrigal ran on and snuck it in the short side off the hands of Josh Adachi as he slid over to cut down the angle.

Adachi and the Tigers' backline stonewalled a pair of point-blank shots in the 31st minute, and Pacific launched into a counter-attack, but Kalei Gallarde's shot ran high.

The Tigers posted six first-half shots, while the Lions attempted 15. Adachi posted five saves in the first period.

In the second half, the Lions went a man down in the 62nd minute as Madrigal picked up his second yellow.

But the Lions played a quick long ball ahead and Leon Prikhodovskiy sliced in and finished with his left foot on a shot tucked into the far post.

Spencer Vue ripped a shot just wide in the 64th minute and the Tigers had a scoring chance broken up in the 71st minute by the Lions backline.

Julio Cervantes, playing with a yellow card, went down in the box amid contact and ended up being booked in the 77th minute to even the personnel at 10 on 10.

In the 81st minute, the ball was flipped up in the box by Grant Sampson, and headed home by De Rada for a 3-0 lead.

The Lions padded the margin in the 87th minute when Cruz Corral chipped a shot on towards the net and Dylan Seedman re-directed it into the back of the net.

The Tigers finished with eight shots, but couldn't beat Lions keeper Vince Paldino.  Adachi finished with six saves.

Pacific falls to 2-10-0 overall, while LMU improves to 6-3-3 overall.

The Tigers will head to San Diego for 1 p.m. contest against the Toreros.
